Creating chat-based AI apps #coding #aiengineering

One thing I had to learn a long the way while working with chat based applications - the waiting room effect. Show people they’re Making progress even if they don’t have it fully all he way there yet.

that’s what adding steaming was all about for me

here’s a quick demo video of with and without streaming

2/18 Edited to

... Read moreWhen developing chat-based AI applications, one crucial user experience principle to keep in mind is the "Waiting Room Effect." This concept revolves around managing users’ perception of wait times. From my experience, users tend to feel disconnected or frustrated if they don't see any indication that their input is being processed, even if the backend is working efficiently. In real-world interactions, people expect some sign of progress as a reassurance. In chat AI apps, incorporating streaming—where responses gradually appear in real time—can bridge this gap effectively. Rather than waiting for a complete answer, streaming allows users to see text being typed or generated bit by bit. This visible progression reassures users, reducing anxiety and improving their patience and engagement. For instance, chatbots answering complex questions can benefit from streaming by displaying partial information as it becomes available, simulating a natural conversation flow. From a coding perspective, implementing streaming requires handling data asynchronously, which might increase complexity but yields significant UX benefits. Additionally, testing chat agents both with and without streaming highlights stark differences: without streaming, users might perceive the app as unresponsive; with streaming, conversations feel dynamic and interactive. The Waiting Room Effect stresses that users don't necessarily need to have final answers immediately; what matters most is the perception of forward movement. This insight is applicable beyond chatbots—any interactive AI application can enhance user satisfaction by signaling ongoing progress. Incorporating this user-centered approach in AI engineering ultimately leads to higher retention, better feedback, and an improved overall experience. If you're creating chat-based AI apps, consider prioritizing streaming or similar progress indicators to keep your users informed and engaged during the interaction.
