Will using a steam cleaner eliminate mould?

Using a steam cleaner for mold removal sounds convenient, but there are some important aspects to consider for it to be truly effective. First, the temperature of the steam matters a lot. Steam between 60 to 80 degrees Celsius can kill most mold spores, but anything cooler might not be strong enough to eliminate them. I found that simply sliding the steam cleaner over the moldy surface doesn't cut it; instead, holding the steam nozzle or mat over the affected spot for a longer period helps ensure the heat penetrates deeply enough to kill the mold. Also, while the steam is effective, the moisture and heat it introduces can cause increased humidity in walls or ceilings, which may promote future mold growth if the room isn’t ventilated properly. So after steam cleaning, it’s critical to ventilate the area well or use a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture. Another issue I noticed is that if the steam spreads beyond the targeted area without protection, it can lead to mold development in other parts of the house. It’s a good idea to isolate the space you're cleaning and protect nearby surfaces. In summary, steam cleaning can be a useful mold removal method if done correctly—with high enough temperatures, proper exposure time, and post-cleaning ventilation.
