Over 40 Snowboarding
It’s been over 20 years and I wish I started going again sooner. #snowboarding #over40
Picking up snowboarding again after two decades at 40 was definitely a leap of faith for me! Like many, I thought my prime boarding days were behind me, but that itch to hit the slopes just wouldn't go away. If you're over 40 and thinking about learning to snowboard, or even returning after a long break, let me tell you, it's absolutely doable and incredibly rewarding. I want to share a bit more about my experience and some insights that might help you on your own journey. One of the biggest things I faced wasn't just physical, but mental. The fear of injury is definitely more present when you're older. My body doesn't bounce back like it used to in my 20s! I also noticed my stamina wasn't what it once was, and flexibility took a hit. Starting slow and being honest with myself about my limits was crucial. There were definitely moments of frustration, feeling like a beginner all over again, but pushing through those was part of the fun. Tips for Success When Learning/Returning Over 40: 1. Physical Prep is Key: Before I even thought about strapping on a board, I started a simple fitness routine focusing on core strength, leg stability, and flexibility. Squats, lunges, and some yoga really made a difference in preventing muscle soreness and improving my balance on the mountain. Don't skip this step – your body will thank you! 2. Invest in the Right Gear: Comfort and safety are paramount. Modern gear is so much better than what I used 20 years ago! Get a good helmet, wrist guards, and padded shorts. For the board itself, consider something forgiving and flexible if you're re-learning or a beginner. Don't be afraid to rent first until you figure out what you like. 3. Take Lessons (Seriously!): This was a game-changer for me. Even with past experience, having a professional instructor guide me through modern techniques and help me shake off bad habits was invaluable. They can also teach you how to fall safely, which is super important when you're older. Group lessons are great for meeting others, or a private lesson can really focus on your specific needs. 4. Patience and Mindset: You won't be carving like a pro on day one, and that's perfectly okay! Embrace the learning curve. Celebrate small victories, like linking a few turns or confidently riding a green run. Don't compare yourself to younger riders; focus on your own progress and enjoyment. It's about the experience, not just showing off. 5. Choose Your Conditions Wisely: Start on gentle, well-groomed slopes, especially on days with good visibility and softer snow. Avoid icy conditions or crowded days initially. This reduces stress and helps build confidence. Despite the initial wobbles and a few tumbles, the feeling of gliding down the mountain again, the crisp mountain air, and the sheer joy of mastering something new is absolutely incredible. Snowboarding is a fantastic full-body workout, a great way to clear your head, and a wonderful social activity. It reminded me that age is truly just a number when it comes to pursuing passions. So, if you're contemplating learning or re-learning snowboarding at 40 or beyond, my advice is to go for it! Take it slow, prepare properly, and most importantly, have fun. It's an amazing adventure waiting to happen, and you'll be so glad you took the plunge. See you on the slopes!
