I’m not paying $30/hr for a play gym 🙂‍↕️

At least not in this economy, so I decided to build one at home 🏠✨ Here’s what we’ve got so far:

1. Pikler triangle set

Gross motor development, at home, for free! Got the regular size instead of the mini one for more mileage, but at this point it’s too huge for baby (10mo) so he’s content crawling under the structures

2. Textured Rug

Got our 240x150cm rug from Taobao for about $200.

It’s OEKO-TEX certified & sooo soft. ⚠️ got a deep-cleaning company to come clean this (for $150) before using because we foresee baby kissing it a lot

3. Roche Bobois Bombom 4-seater

Definitely on the pricier side but it’s so comfortable for lounging, and the cushions double up as boulders for baby practise pushing, pulling and crawling over. These cushions are on the ground more than they are on the sofa. We love functional furniture doing double duty 🙌🏼Worth every penny!!!

4. Roche Bobois Bombom Sorvette Cocktail Tables

Got them in a glossy yellow and duck-egg blue. These colourful pieces complete our bombom collection. It’s low to the ground so baby enjoys these pieces as well.

Still very much a work in progress but already getting so much mileage out of it. Already in my cart are the Staplestein stepping stones, which I’m hoping to make space for next :-)

... Read moreCreating a DIY play gym at home has been one of the best parenting decisions I’ve made! Not only does it save money compared to pricey hourly rates at commercial play gyms, but it also allows me to tailor the space perfectly to my baby’s needs and our home environment. For instance, the Pikler triangle is fantastic for gross motor skill development—it encourages climbing, pulling up, and crawling in a safe way that adapts as your baby grows. I was initially hesitant about investing in the textured rug because of the cost, but getting an OEKO-TEX certified soft rug was worth it for the sensory experience it provides. Plus, the deep cleaning before use gave me peace of mind about hygiene since babies naturally explore everything with their mouths. The rug’s size allows for plenty of space for crawling and sensory play. What amazed me most was how multifunctional furniture can transform a room. The Roche Bobois Bombom 4-seater serves as a comfy spot for adults and a climbing obstacle course for my baby. Those movable cushions really encourage my little one to practice pushing, pulling, and crawling, building strength while having fun. The colorful cocktail tables are low to the ground and add a playful vibe that's easy for the baby to access safely. This setup shows that with some creativity and smart choices, you can build an enriching play space that promotes physical and sensory development without overspending. I also plan to add Staplestein stepping stones soon to introduce new textures and challenge balance in a playful way. Overall, this home play gym has been a joy to watch grow from simple beginnings into a space full of learning and exploration.
