Should You Give Tylenol AND Motrin?
Parents are already scared of fevers, and online advice about Tylenol and Motrin can make it even more confusing.
When we’re talking about giving Tylenol and Motrin together for fever, “can you do this” and “should you do this” are two different questions.
There are times when Tylenol and Motrin together can make sense when dosed correctly in otherwise healthy, well-hydrated children. For example, after some surgeries or procedures, a clinician may recommend using both as part of a pain-control plan.
But fever is a different question.
Some advice online can make fever sound like something you need to get ahead of quickly with both medications. For most childhood fevers, that urgent framework is not typically recommended.
Fever is not usually a runaway process. It is a controlled part of the immune response.
While both medications can reduce fever, more temperature reduction does not automatically mean better outcomes. It does not necessarily mean your child will recover faster, avoid complications, or even be more comfortable.
The goal of treating fever is improving your child’s comfort, not forcing the temperature back to normal.
If your child is drinking, breathing comfortably, alert, and able to rest, you may not need fever medicine at all.
If they’re uncomfortable, it’s usually advised to start with one medication dosed correctly.
If they remain significantly uncomfortable after giving it enough time to work, adding the second can be reasonable.
But two medications also means more room for confusion, especially with tired parents in the middle of the night. If you are giving both, write the dosing times down.
You don’t need to jump on top of every fever.
Treat comfort. Not the number.

Save this for the next fever.
From personal experience as a parent, managing a child's fever often leads to confusion about whether to use Tylenol, Motrin, or both. It helped me understand that fever itself is the body's natural defense and not always something that needs aggressive treatment unless the child is uncomfortable. In cases where your child is very uneasy despite giving one medication, alternating or combining Tylenol and Motrin under proper guidance may provide better relief. However, it's crucial to keep a detailed log of doses and timing to avoid accidental overdosing, especially late at night when fatigue sets in. Remember, the primary goal is to make your child comfortable rather than just lowering the temperature number. Ensuring your child stays hydrated and rests well contributes significantly to their recovery. If uncertain, a quick call to your pediatrician can clarify the best approach for your child's specific situation. This balanced way to approach fever treatment can reduce stress for parents and help children recover comfortably and safely.
