Get to know... the Nipah virus and its preventive approach
Nipah virus is a zoonotic virus.
Main disease source: fruit bats
Severity: High, can cause cerebral inflammation, pneumonia and death.
Common symptoms
• Fever, headaches, aches and pains
• Cough, shortness of breath
• Sleepy, seepage, confusion, seizures (severe cases)
⏱️ The incubation period is generally about 4-14 days (some may be longer).
🔁 Contact
• Touch bat / infectious animal secretions
• Eat fruit or juice that may be contaminated (e.g. fresh date juice)
• Human-to-human contact through secretions (close / patient care)
🛡️. Preventive guidelines.
• ❌ Avoid fruit with gnawing / falling on the ground
• ❌ Avoid fresh, unprocessed juices (especially fresh date water)
• ✅ Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
• ✅ Use protective equipment when caring for patients (gloves, masks)
• ✅ If there is a fever with neurological symptoms, see a doctor.
Currently, there are no specific medicines or general vaccines.
Prevention and palliative care are therefore the most important.
