When writing might not be the best tool

Yes, journaling can be healing.

But it’s not always the right tool RIGHT now.

If you are in the middle of a crisis, newly traumatized, or emotionally overwhelmed, journaling can stir up more than you’re ready to hold.

That doesn’t mean you have failed.

It just means you are human.

And sometimes, healing starts by asking for help.

Not doing it alone on the page.

Start soft.

Write what feels safe.

Breathe.

And find help if you need it!

... Read moreJournaling is widely celebrated for its therapeutic benefits, but timing and emotional readiness are crucial factors in its effectiveness. If you find yourself in a fresh crisis or feeling emotionally flooded, traditional journaling that involves deep emotional exploration might be overwhelming or even retraumatizing. In such moments, the goal is not to force yourself to write extensively, but to engage with writing as a tool that meets you where you are. When experiencing severe emotional distress, such as symptoms of PTSD or severe depression, it’s important to approach journaling with caution. Instead of diving into detailed accounts of trauma, consider gentler methods—like creating lists of things you notice in your environment, capturing small and safe memories, or describing sensory details. These softer entry points can help ground your thoughts and emotions without triggering distressing feelings. Breathing through writing—focusing on short, steady entries that feel safe—is another helpful strategy. For example, start with prompts like "Right now, one thing helping me is..." or "A moment today that felt okay was..." These simple reflections allow you to maintain connection to yourself without overwhelming emotional exposure. It's also important to realize that feeling unable to write or hesitant to do so during tough times does not indicate failure. Rather, it reflects a natural human response to trauma and overwhelm. Healing often requires reaching out for support—whether from trusted friends, therapists, or crisis lines—rather than trying to manage everything alone. Remember, journaling is one of many tools for healing and self-care. On days when writing deeply feels too challenging, consider alternative ways to care for your mental health: mindfulness exercises, gentle movement, or supportive conversations. Always honor your personal pace and needs, ensuring that any step you take supports your well-being without causing additional stress or harm.

Thank you for posting this. I thought I was the only one that felt like this. There are certain things I just can’t journal about because putting it to paper brings all the emotions right back. Then I have a hard time functioning normally because it is all I can think about. I know I need to work through it. But it is just too much sometimes to have to think about it again like that. I know the time will come. But for certain things I’m just not ready.
