Let’s be honest…
most of us avoid journaling when we know we have some stuff we should be writing down.
I did it this morning. In fact I’m in a big journal protest currently. Lots I should be writing about but I’m just…not.
That’s the thing.
It’s not that journaling is hard.
It’s that it’s honest, and sometimes honesty feels like, “Oh wow, I did not ask to be emotionally roasted today, thanks.”
But avoiding your journal doesn’t make the feelings go away.
It just turns them into emotional dust bunnies that collect in the corners until they start whispering, “hey… remember us?”
If this made you feel called out in a loving way, good.
Your journal isn’t judging you. It’s just patiently waiting for you to stop ghosting it.
And honestly- I should take my own advice and go write.

Many people hesitate to journal not because it is difficult to put thoughts on paper, but because journaling demands honesty, which can be intimidating and emotionally intense. Avoiding your journal doesn't make uncomfortable feelings disappear; instead, it allows these emotions to accumulate, quietly urging you to pay attention. This emotional buildup can manifest as mental clutter or stress, whispering reminders for you to confront what’s been kept inside. It’s important to recognize that journaling doesn't require deep insights or perfectly crafted sentences. Messy, half-formed thoughts and imperfect pages are actually the heart of an authentic journaling practice. These imperfect entries reflect your true mental state and help slow down the mind just enough to reveal emotions or ideas you may have been running from. Perfectionism often holds people back from journaling. Fear of doing it “wrong,” or creating “ugly pages,” can stop you before you even start. Yet those imperfect pages are exactly what lead to breakthroughs and healing. Think of journaling as a door you can open and close whenever you want—it doesn’t trap you in difficult feelings but gives you the space to explore them safely. For those experiencing numbness or emotional avoidance, journaling offers a way to gently uncover what’s beneath. While numbness might feel safer, clarity often brings the chance to heal and grow. Your journal isn’t judging or calling you out; it’s inviting you back home to your inner self. If you’ve been avoiding your journal, consider this a loving reminder that something inside you wants to be heard. Starting is often the hardest step—but once you begin, journaling can become a powerful tool for mental health, self-reflection, and emotional well-being. Incorporating journaling prompts or simply writing honest, unfiltered thoughts can transform your practice into a softer, braver journey towards self-discovery and healing.
