I started journaling at 10 or 11

Messy and misspelled

My journals are anything but perfect.

I was never good in school, but in the pages of my journal I was everything I needed to be.

73 messy, misspelled, tear stained journals later

I still show up.

Perfectly imperfect.

Perfection keeps you stuck.

Messy pages move you forward.

Start where you are. ✍️

... Read moreJournaling has always been a deeply personal and transformative practice for me, especially because I've never aimed for perfection in my entries. From a young age, around 10 or 11, I started filling pages with my thoughts, feelings, and experiences, without concern for neat handwriting or flawless grammar. Over time, I've learned that the true power of journaling lies in honesty—not aesthetic appeal or polished content. One lesson that stands out is how perfectionism can actually hold you back. When I first began, I thought I needed the right pen, the perfect lighting, or a specific mood to write effectively. However, the most profound growth and clarity came from simply putting pen to paper, no matter how messy or misspelled my entries were. This aligns with the idea that "perfection is procrastination in a cute outfit," meaning the quest for flawless writing often becomes an excuse to avoid starting at all. Messy journaling also provided a safe space for self-discovery and emotional release. Tear-stained pages and scattered thoughts became testimony to my journey—flaws and all. These imperfect records of my feelings helped me process challenges and celebrate small victories, making journaling a form of self-care rather than a task. For those hesitant to start or stuck aiming for perfection, my advice is simple: start where you are. Allow yourself to write freely, embracing mistakes as part of the process. The authentic act of writing regularly fosters mental clarity and personal growth that no perfectly curated journal can match. Remember, journaling is not about the end result—it’s about showing up for yourself consistently. Whether you write a few words or spill pages full of raw emotion, your journal becomes a powerful tool for change. Messy, honest journaling truly changes lives, and that’s something I’ve witnessed firsthand throughout my journey.
