Journaling isn’t hard.

3/16 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my personal experience, journaling became a transformative practice once I stopped chasing perfection and let go of rigid expectations. Many people, including myself, fall into the trap of waiting for significant moments or profound thoughts before putting pen to paper. But journaling isn't about delivering a TED talk; it's a space to be messy and authentic. Consistency doesn't have to mean daily commitment. Early on, I felt discouraged when missing a day made me feel like a failure. Accepting that journaling can be irregular but meaningful changed my perspective and helped me sustain the habit. Your journaling tools don’t have to be Pinterest-worthy. I’ve written memorable entries on simple scraps of paper or in my phone’s notes app when a notebook wasn’t handy. The emphasis is on access, not aesthetics. One of the biggest revelations was accepting that not every page needs to be deep or heavily reflective. Some days, simply noting “I’m tired” or “had a tough meeting” still counts as meaningful journaling. It helps unload mental clutter and sustain self-awareness. Lastly, I stopped judging spelling, handwriting, or rambling thoughts. My journal is not a report card but a personal refuge. This shift made journaling feel safe and took the pressure off, making the process more enjoyable and sustainable. If you’re just starting or feeling overwhelmed, try asking yourself: "What would make journaling feel easier?" rather than "How do I do it better?" This mindset can make all the difference, turning journaling from a daunting task into a helpful, stress-relieving habit.

A lot of people quit right before this “witness” part actually clicks. Because instead of insight… they get distraction, resistance, or a whole lot of “I don’t know.” That’s the moment most people assume it’s not working. But that is the practice. Not every entry reveals something big.

Journaling Isn’t a Habit
Somewhere along the way, journaling got turned into another thing to be good at. A streak. A routine. A box to check before bed. And if you miss a day? You feel like you failed. But that pressure is exactly what shuts people down. Because self-trust doesn’t grow from discipline alone.

Why journaling isn’t working (yet)
If journaling feels like it’s “not working,” it’s usually not because you’re bad at it. It’s because you’ve accidentally turned it into a performance. Trying to say the right thing. Trying to fix yourself. Trying to make every page meaningful. That pressure will shut you down every time.
