Your nervous system isn’t broken

I used to think the answer was to “get it together.”

Spoiler alert: my nervous system did not respond well to being yelled at by… me. 😂

These days, I pay attention to the little warning signs. I start rereading the same email five times. Every noise suddenly feels personal. I wander into the kitchen and forget why I’m there. (Please tell me I’m not the only one.)

That’s usually my cue that I don’t need to work harder—I need to downshift.

Sometimes that means a slow lap around the block. Sometimes it’s tea in my favorite mug. Sometimes it’s dumping a page of absolute nonsense into my journal until my brain finally says, “Okay… thanks. I needed that.”

Tiny rituals aren’t magic. They’re just a way of reminding your body that the emergency is over.

And honestly? Ten minutes is a whole lot easier to find than spending the next three hours trying to force your way through a brain that has already clocked out.

Your nervous system isn’t asking for perfection.

It’s asking for a minute.

... Read moreFrom personal experience, managing moments when my nervous system feels overwhelmed has been a game changer. I remember so clearly the overwhelming feeling of rereading the same email multiple times or being easily startled by everyday noises. Instead of forcing myself to push through, I found that incorporating small, meaningful rituals really helps me reset. One of the most effective practices is taking a slow, mindful walk around the block—not to exercise, but to just move my body and interrupt the mental overwhelm loop. Left foot, right foot, forward motion reminds my brain that I’m not stuck in a stressful moment. It’s simple but powerful. Next, journaling without any pressure or prompts gives my busy mind a chance to unload. I write whatever is happening inside me in that moment, no editing or fixing—just emptying thoughts onto paper. This process softens intense feelings and lightens the load on my nervous system. I finish with sipping a warm cup of tea, water, or coffee. Holding the cup and feeling the warmth grounds me and signals to my body that it’s safe to pause and breathe. These steps have helped me realize that perfect stillness or long retreats aren’t necessary to find calm. Sometimes just 10 minutes of tending to yourself in these small ways can restore balance and improve focus for the rest of the day. If you find yourself spiraling or overstimulated, try this gentle reset ritual. It’s kinder on your nervous system and a sustainable way to cultivate mindful living and self-care daily.
