The Journal Entry You’re Avoiding

Ever notice how the second you get close to writing the real thing, your brain suddenly remembers you absolutely must organize your bookshelf by color? Or that now is the perfect time to write three pages about the weather?

Our minds are hilarious like that.

Writing around the truth usually isn’t procrastination. It’s protection. Your brain is trying to keep you comfortable, even when comfort is exactly what’s keeping you stuck.

The funny part? You don’t have to cannonball straight into the deep end.

Sometimes the sentence that gets everything moving is as simple as, “I don’t even want to write about this.”

Start there.

Your journal isn’t expecting polished thoughts or a beautiful life lesson tied up with a neat little bow. It’s just giving your truth somewhere to land.

If blank pages still make you freeze, I put together a free guide with simple prompts to help you get words on the page without feeling like you’re writing your memoir. You can grab it from my profile.

... Read moreI’ve often found that the hardest part of journaling isn’t the writing itself, but admitting what you truly feel. Many times, like the original article mentions, our mind invents distractions—like organizing a bookshelf or describing the weather—to avoid facing raw, vulnerable truths. From personal experience, the key to overcoming this isn’t forcing yourself to dive into the most painful parts right away; rather, it’s allowing yourself permission to start with simple honesty, such as writing, “I don’t even want to write about this.” One technique that helped me was acknowledging the discomfort openly in my journal. This approach not only relieved the pressure of having to produce perfectly polished writing but also created a safe space for my feelings to unfold naturally. I noticed that when I stopped avoiding the “messy middle,” the insights I gained were deeper and more meaningful. This aligns with the idea that the parts we fear writing most often resonate strongest with others. The OCR text highlights this perfectly by explaining how we tend to write around feelings—using clever words or focusing on abstract concepts like growth—instead of addressing the feeling itself. I experienced the same pattern in my journaling journey. Once I recognized that pattern, I began to gently guide my writing toward those uncomfortable truths, trusting that vulnerability was part of healing and self-understanding. For anyone freezing in front of a blank page, starting small with prompts or simply admitting reluctance can be a gateway to progress. If you’re struggling with journaling, consider this your permission slip to explore your truth without judgment. Your journal is not a performance; it’s a personal space where honesty matters more than perfection. Consistent journaling with this mindset gradually reduced my anxiety about “getting it right” and increased my clarity and creativity. It taught me that facing avoidance head-on, by naming it, can be the most powerful writing exercise of all. So next time you find yourself delaying that tough journal entry, remind yourself: what truth am I avoiding, and how can I start just by saying so?

The Truth You’re Avoiding Is the Entry Point

I didn’t expect journaling to hit me like this — but these five prompts touched places I hadn’t looked at in a long time. One asked what I’m still carrying that doesn’t belong to me. Another asked what I need but never say out loud. Another asked who I am when no one expects anything from me.
