Brainspotting

Having recently attended Brainspotting Phase 1 training, I was amazed by how this therapeutic technique dives beyond traditional talk therapy to tap into the body's stored emotional experiences. Brainspotting uses focused eye positions (brainspots) combined with body awareness to locate and process trauma buried in the nervous system, making it a deeply somatic and client-led method. What stood out most to me was how Brainspotting differs from EMDR. While both therapies use bilateral stimulation, Brainspotting tends to be more flexible and less structured, allowing clients to pace their healing more intuitively. The therapist follows subtle cues like reflexive eye movements and shifts in body tension to locate the precise 'brainspots' where emotional pain is held. This method seems especially effective for complex trauma, dissociation, and clients who find verbalizing their experiences challenging. I’ve heard from others that Brainspotting often feels gentler emotionally than rigid talk therapies, which can be overwhelming for some. From my training, I look forward to integrating this approach into my practice to help clients access deeper somatic healing pathways and resolve longstanding emotional blocks. Moreover, the flexible and client-centered nature of Brainspotting sessions means it can be adapted for both in-person and virtual therapy, broadening access for those seeking healing.
