Meet Zira 🐾

It's been such an adventure since Zira joined our family! When we first decided on an Australian Kelpie x American Akita mix, we knew we were signing up for a unique personality, and she hasn't disappointed. For those curious about what it's like to have such an energetic and intelligent companion, let me tell you a bit more about our daily life with Zira. One of the first things people ask is about her energy levels. Being a Kelpie mix, she's definitely got that working dog drive! She needs a good amount of exercise every day, which often includes long walks, runs in the park – where she has so much fun exploring every scent and chasing after her favorite frisbee – and plenty of playtime in the backyard. We try to make sure she gets at least an hour or two of intense activity daily, otherwise, she might just decide to redecorate our living room with her toys! It's a commitment, but seeing her so happy and fulfilled makes it all worth it. Her Akita side brings out a wonderfully loyal and sometimes surprisingly goofy nature. While Kelpies are known for their focus, Zira has this calm, observant streak, often just watching everything around her with such intensity. She's incredibly protective and devoted to our family, always wanting to be close by. But then, she'll suddenly get a burst of Akita 'zoomies,' circling the house or yard with pure joy, which always makes us laugh. Training has been an ongoing journey. Both breeds are highly intelligent, which means Zira learns quickly, but she also has her own strong opinions! Consistency is key, and we've found that positive reinforcement works wonders. She loves learning new tricks, especially when treats are involved, and it’s a great way to mentally stimulate her, which is just as important as physical exercise for a dog like her. Her favorite pastime, besides playing in the park, is definitely 'critter patrol.' Whether it's a squirrel in the oak tree or a curious bird rustling in the bushes, Zira is on it! Her focused gaze and quiet stalk are hilarious to watch, though thankfully she's more interested in observing than actually catching any of our garden visitors. She truly embodies that active, inquisitive spirit of her breeds. If you're thinking about getting a similar mix, be prepared for a dog that needs both physical and mental engagement.
