Why I feel fortunate to be in SG

This chicken rice is not the tastiest but definitely the most reasonably priced chicken rice in SG that serves as a reminder on why I feel fortunate to be in SG.

In SG, we have a huge variety of food at various price points. From humble stalls like this chicken rice at $1.90 to Michelin pricing.

It may come as a surprise, contrary to what most people think, but food as a percentage of income is manageable in SG.

If you manage your options well, you definitely can get nice decent meals & within budget.

... Read moreLiving in Singapore offers a unique culinary experience that caters to all budgets, making it easier to appreciate the vibrant food culture without breaking the bank. Beyond just affordable chicken rice stalls, Singapore’s hawker centers are a treasure trove of budget-friendly delicacies covering various local and international cuisines. From local favorites like laksa, char kway teow, and satay to international delights such as Japanese ramen or Korean BBQ, the variety is extensive. What makes Singapore stand out is the quality and cleanliness maintained across these food outlets, even those priced very competitively. This balance between price and quality is a major reason why many residents feel fortunate to live here. I personally enjoy exploring different hawker centers, where I can find tasty meals within SGD 3 to 5, which is manageable for most working professionals and students. Moreover, the government’s efforts to uplift hawker culture and ensure fair pricing help maintain this equilibrium, enabling everyone to enjoy a decent meal. Budgeting for food in Singapore becomes quite straightforward if one is mindful of options. Frequenting less touristy areas or smaller stalls often offers better value for money. The variety also means you can enjoy diverse meals without repetition, keeping dining exciting. An interesting aspect is how food expenditure aligns with income for many residents. Contrary to the perception of high living costs, Singaporeans often find that food constitutes a reasonable percentage of household expenses, especially with mindful spending habits. This is a blessing in a city known for its fast pace and busy lifestyle. In short, Singapore’s food landscape provides a blend of affordability, accessibility, and quality, reinforcing why many feel fortunate to be here. Whether it’s a humble chicken rice priced at SGD 1.90 or a gourmet meal, the city offers choices that suit different palates and pockets, making everyday dining a pleasure rather than a burden.
