It used to be a rusty-by-the road small town

The shops used to line by the side of road whereby travellers, especially going to Melaka will stop. In the past, this place was lined with ceramics & fruit shops.

Whole place has been transformed. Even & wider roads. Shops are now into a big market place, selling bananas, pineapples, sweet potatoes, yams, just like the old days.

Another good thing is that you can still find mobile sellers like the durian uncle.

... Read moreVisiting Ayer Hitam today is truly a surprising experience, especially if you recall its humble beginnings as a sleepy roadside stop for travelers headed to Melaka. The transformation here is quite remarkable. The once narrow and modest street has evolved into a spacious and lively market area, filled with stalls offering an impressive range of local fruits and vegetables. One of the most captivating aspects of this town is how it manages to maintain a nostalgic connection to its past. Despite the modernity brought by wider roads and more organized shops, you can still find mobile sellers like the durian uncle making their rounds, calling out to passersby just as they might have done decades ago. This blend of old and new provides a unique atmosphere that resonates deeply with visitors and locals alike. Moreover, Ayer Hitam is renowned for its ceramic shops, which, although less visible today compared to the fruit markets, contribute to the town's rich cultural tapestry. It’s a place where you can appreciate not only the fresh produce but also traditional craftsmanship. For those planning a visit, I recommend taking your time to explore the market thoroughly—sampling fresh bananas and pineapples is a must. You’ll also find stalls selling sweet potatoes and yams reminiscent of rural Malaysian produce that many city dwellers rarely get to enjoy. In short, Ayer Hitam is a vivid example of a small town that has rejuvenated itself while staying true to its roots. Whether you’re a traveler passing through or looking for a quaint local market experience, this town offers a heartfelt glimpse into Malaysia’s cultural heritage combined with the vibrancy of local life.
