What does Etsy need to research before designing?

After choosing whether to start making PNG Sticker, Clipart, Planner, Worksheet or other products, the next step should not be rushed to launch the program and start designing immediately.

What should be done first is Market Research.

The word Research here doesn't have to start with expensive tools, and we don't need to know the sales figures of other stores thoroughly.

The goal is to capture visible information from the market. To help us decide what the first item should look like and form.

In my experience, at first I started with the question:

"What picture do you want to make today?"

Once the theme is figured out, it begins to create an image immediately.

Sometimes the image is beautiful and interesting, but when you think about what product to sell, it is not clear who the customer is, where to use the image, and how to organize the file.

Finally, we will have one set of images, but there is still no direction of goods.

The way to make it work clearer is to change the order of thought.

Start with the customer and use first.

Suppose we want to do Clipart for the teacher.

The word "teacher" is also a very broad group. We have to think about what the teacher will use.

Use to decorate the worksheet

Used to make Classroom Poster

Used to create Reward Chart

Or used to make teaching materials for children.

As the use becomes clearer, we will begin to see the details of the product.

If used to decorate the worksheet, the image should be an easy-to-lay separate object, transparent background, clean image edges, and have multiple shared elements.

If we create a full scene, the picture may be beautiful, but it is difficult for each object to be placed.

The next step is to look at the language the customer is searching for.

Try typing a broad word about the product into Etsy's search box and observe what words appear related to the product type, theme, style, customer group and how to use it.

For example, if we start with the word "teacher clipart," we can organize the words into groups, such as

Product: clipart, PNG, digital download

Customer: teacher, homeschool, classroom

Theme: school, classroom, reading

Usage: worksheet, planner, printable

Style: watercolor, cute, hand drawn

These words are not the conclusion that the product will be sold. Its function is to help us understand what kind of words the customer might describe what they want.

Then open to see multiple items in the same group.

Notice how many files there are on the market, how they are organized, what type of files they use, what kind of preview images, and how they describe the conditions of use.

It should look at multiple stores and multiple price levels. Because one product cannot represent a snapshot of the market.

While watching, separate "what the market is doing" from "what we're going to do."

Research is for understanding customer shopping patterns. You should not repeat the image, line, product name, or specific elements of another store.

Another very useful point is Review.

Customer-satisfied reviews help us see what is valuable for practical use, such as sharp images, easy to download, multiple file options, or clear description by the vendor.

The Review section discussing the problem may help to see the points to be aware of, e.g.

The customer mistook it for real goods.

Downloaded and can't find the file

The picture has a background attached.

The file can't be opened.

The number of files does not match the preview.

Or do not understand the terms of use

We don't have to wait for our customers to come back and solve it.

We can adopt what is found as a checklist from the product planning stage.

After the research, summarize everything in a paper or a page of paper, writing the following:

1. Who are the leads?

2. What products will customers use?

3. What type of file needs to be prepared?

4. What are the relevant queries?

5. What do goods in the market often give customers?

6. What problems do customers like or encounter?

7. Which point will our product develop more clearly?

The difference is not necessarily something that no one has ever done before.

We may choose a specific group of customers, make files easier to use, set them more systematically, or create a Preview that helps customers understand the product faster.

Before you start designing, let's finish this sentence.

"I will make _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ to apply _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _, with the highlight being _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _"

Sample

"I will make a Classroom PNG Clipart for the teacher to decorate the worksheet, highlighting a whole set of easy-to-lay and stylish separate objects."

When you write clearly, you will know what image to create, how many pieces you need, what type of file you should deliver, and what kind of communication you need to preview.

Research does not guarantee that products will be sold, it reduces guessing and gives us more reason to support decisions.

In the next part, we will summarize all the information as Product Direction to use as a plan before the actual product is created.
