Motherhood is a part of my identity, not the entire identity.
I love being a mom. I take that role seriously. But I refuse to believe becoming a mother means I have to stop being ambitious, fly, creative, social, successful, or curious.
So when somebody says, “But you’re a mom…”
I’m like…
WHO’S TODD? 😂
Because respectfully, I don’t remember agreeing to disappear after having kids.
Many mothers face the misconception that once they become parents, their personal ambitions and passions must take a backseat. From my own experience, it’s possible—and essential—to maintain your individual identity alongside motherhood. Society often throws phrases like, “You’re a mom, you can’t just do whatever you want,” suggesting that the role of a mother restricts freedom and limits opportunities. But I’ve found that embracing motherhood can coexist beautifully with being ambitious, creative, and socially active. It helps to set clear boundaries and carve out time for yourself, even amidst the demanding schedule of raising children. Pursuing hobbies, professional goals, or social connections doesn’t make you any less of a mom—in fact, it often enriches your role. Remember, motherhood is an important part of your life but does not define your entire existence. Balancing these identities has encouraged me to stay curious and grow as an individual, rather than disappearing behind the label of "mom." If you or someone you know hears those limiting phrases, challenge them. Keep pushing forward with your dreams and passions; your children will benefit as much from seeing you thrive as a whole person as they will from your parenting.
