I thought I was treating my plant right 🪴😭

6/11 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my experience as a plant enthusiast, I've found that even with the best intentions, it's easy to make subtle mistakes that can harm our beloved houseplants. One of the most common issues is using pots without drainage holes. No matter how pretty the pot is, without drainage, excess water accumulates and causes root rot, often silently killing the plant. Switching to pots with proper drainage or adding a layer of pebbles can make a huge difference. Another crucial factor is the choice of soil. Many of us might grab garden soil offhand, but houseplants thrive best in a well-draining mix specially designed for indoor plants. It helps prevent waterlogging and promotes healthy root growth. When it comes to pot size, bigger isn’t always better; going up one size at a time prevents soggy soil and root stress from excess moisture. Inspecting plants thoroughly each week is another habit that saved many of my plants. Pests often hide under leaves or at the base, so flipping leaves gently and checking for tiny bugs or eggs helps catch infestations early before serious damage. Regarding fertilizing, I learned the hard way that feeding plants year-round isn't ideal. Most houseplants grow actively in spring and summer, and that's when they benefit most from fertilizer. Overfeeding or underfeeding can stunt growth or cause nutrient burn. Placement also matters a lot. Avoid placing plants near air vents where cold or hot air blows directly, as this can stress leaves and cause drying out. Lastly, using cold tap water straight from the faucet shocked some of my sensitive plants. Letting water sit overnight to reach room temperature and allowing chlorine to dissipate is a simple step that proved very beneficial. Incorporating these seven corrections significantly improved my plants' health and longevity. For anyone struggling with their indoor garden, these tips are a practical starting point to bring your plants back to life.
