Prune your roses NOW for double blooms next year!

Want your roses to bloom even more next year? 🌹✨

Here are the 3 pruning steps every gardener should know:

1️⃣ Remove spindly, weak growth – let the plant focus energy on strong stems.

2️⃣ Cut above an outward-facing bud – encourages healthy, outward growth.

3️⃣ Open up the center – better airflow = fewer diseases and more blooms.

Do these now and thank yourself next spring! 🌼

Do you prune your roses every year?

... Read moreBeyond just pruning, consistent rose bush maintenance is key to a truly thriving garden filled with beautiful blooms, just like the lovely pink ones I adore! Pruning, as we covered, is absolutely essential for encouraging new growth and maximizing flowers, but it's just one piece of the puzzle. Over the years, I've picked up a few more tricks that keep my roses healthy and happy. First off, let’s talk about watering. It might seem obvious, but proper watering makes a huge difference. I always aim for deep watering rather than frequent shallow sprinkles. This encourages the roots to grow deeper, making the plant more resilient. I usually water early in the morning so the leaves have time to dry before evening, which helps prevent fungal diseases. During hot, dry spells, my roses can get quite thirsty, so I check the soil moisture regularly by sticking my finger a couple of inches down. If it feels dry, it's time for a drink! Next up is feeding for fantastic flowers. Roses are heavy feeders, meaning they need a good supply of nutrients to produce those gorgeous, continuous blooms. I love using a balanced rose-specific fertilizer, usually starting in early spring after the first flush of growth, and then every 4-6 weeks until late summer. I've also found that enriching the soil with compost or well-rotted manure a couple of times a year really boosts their vitality. It’s like giving them a superfood smoothie! Then there's the magic of mulch. A good layer of mulch around the base of your rose bushes does wonders. I use about 2-3 inches of organic mulch like wood chips or shredded bark. This helps retain soil moisture, keeps the soil temperature more consistent, and suppresses weeds. Less weeding means more time to admire those blossoms! Plus, as the mulch breaks down, it slowly adds nutrients back into the soil. Pest patrol and disease defense are ongoing tasks, but good maintenance significantly reduces problems. After pruning with my sharp shears, I always make sure to clean them to prevent spreading any potential diseases. I regularly inspect my roses for any signs of aphids, spider mites, or black spot. If I spot anything, I usually start with organic solutions like a strong spray of water (for aphids) or neem oil. A healthy, well-ventilated plant (thanks to proper pruning!) is less susceptible to these issues in the first place. Finally, don't forget the art of deadheading. This isn't technically pruning for next year's big flush, but it's crucial for continuous blooming throughout the season. Once a flower fades, I snip it off just above the first set of five leaves. This tells the plant to put its energy into producing more flowers instead of forming seeds. It's incredibly satisfying to see new buds emerge shortly after deadheading. By combining these practices—smart pruning, consistent watering, regular feeding, mulching, and vigilant pest and disease management—you'll not only get double blooms next year but a truly spectacular rose garden all season long. It’s a bit of work, but seeing those vibrant pink blooms makes it all worthwhile!
