Hey everyone! So you've seen the cool Family Guy character I whipped up using Desmos functions and might be wondering, 'How in the world do I even start drawing characters with math?' Trust me, it's not as daunting as it looks, and it's incredibly rewarding! I wanted to share a few tips and tricks I've picked up on my journey to creating Desmos characters. First off, think of basic geometric shapes as your building blocks. Circles are your best friend for heads, eyes, and rounded body parts. You know, (x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2 = r^2 for a circle. For ellipses, just tweak those denominators. Lines are straightforward, often using y = mx + b or inequalities for segments. Don't forget parabolas (y = ax^2 + bx + c) for curves like smiles or hair outlines, and even hyperbolas for more complex shapes. The key is to understand how each part of the equation changes the shape and position on the graph. Once you have your basic shapes, the real fun begins: combining them! This often involves using domain and range restrictions. For example, if you want a half-circle for an eyelid, you'd add a condition like {x > 0} or {y < 0} to your circle equation. It's like cutting out pieces of paper and arranging them. You'll be using a lot of curly braces {} to define where your functions appear. This is crucial for layering and making distinct features for your character. Another powerful technique is using parameters. For instance, if you're drawing two identical eyes, instead of writing two separate equations, you can use a parameter a and define (x-a)^2 + y^2 = r^2 and input values for a like a = -2, 2 to get two circles centered at x = -2 and x = 2. This makes your work much more efficient and easily modifiable. And guess what? You can even make animations with functions! This is where Desmos truly shines. By introducing a time parameter (often denoted as t) into your equations, you can create dynamic movements. Imagine slowly changing the radius of an eye to make it blink, or shifting the h or k values to make a character walk. It's all about observing how a value change affects your graph and then automating that change over time. Many of the complex mathematical expressions you might have seen in Desmos graphs are often related to these parametric and animation techniques. It takes some experimentation, but seeing your character move is absolutely magical! My biggest piece of advice for anyone wanting to draw "desmos characters" is to start simple. Pick a cartoon character with basic shapes, like a stick figure or a simple emoji, and try to replicate it. Break it down into its core components. The eyes are circles, the mouth is a parabola, the body is a rectangle (or defined by inequalities). Don't be afraid to try, fail, and try again. It's a journey of discovery, blending math and art in a way that's both challenging and incredibly rewarding. Happy graphing!
