4 things I learned on our recent trip to NYC... and #4 could save you hundreds of dollars 👇
1. See Hamilton. It lives up to the hype. If you get the chance, take it.
2. Stay at The Archer Hotel. Such a great home base, comfortable rooms and a location that made it easy to get everywhere we wanted to go.
3. Eat at Din Tai Fung. We pretty much knew immediately that this was a restaurant that we wanted to come back to. Quick tip though, get a reservation or join the waitlist ahead of time. That’s how we got in and it saved us a long wait.
4. Negotiate with your pedicab driver BEFORE you get on. This is the one that could save you real money. Pedicabs can set their own rates and most charge by the minute, not by the ride. And since they’re riding alongside car traffic, that time adds up fast. We found this out the hard way and paid a hefty price for what ended up being about a ten minute ride. Agree on a price with your driver before you hop on, not after.
Have you visited before? What tips do you have? 👇
Having spent some time exploring New York City myself, I can truly attest to the value of these tips—especially the advice about pedicab fares. Pedicabs, also known as bike taxis, offer a unique and fun way to see parts of Manhattan, but I learned the hard way that the charges aren’t usually fixed. They often charge by the minute, and with traffic congestion, what seems like a short ride can quickly rack up a hefty bill. To avoid this, I always recommend agreeing on a flat fare before your ride starts. Aside from transportation, I would add some thoughts about getting tickets to Hamilton. It really is a spectacular show, and while tickets can be pricey, options like lottery tickets or rush tickets offer chances to experience the magic at lower costs if you’re flexible and willing to take a chance. Catching the show is definitely worth checking availability often. Staying downtown or Midtown Manhattan at hotels like The Archer is a strategic choice. It places you right in the hub of action, close to landmarks like Times Square and Penn Station. The comfortable ambiance and attentive staff can make your rest between busy days much more enjoyable. When it comes to dining, Din Tai Fung is a standout. The soup dumplings are rightly acclaimed and the service efficient, but reservations are a must in this popular spot. Planning ahead or using their waitlist system saved me from long waits and helped fit it seamlessly into my itinerary. Finally, exploring NYC’s cultural and culinary scene is made better when you mix careful planning with openness to spontaneous experiences. From Broadway shows to local hidden gems, New York has a never-ending list of must-dos. Always keep a backup plan and stay hydrated while exploring on foot or by pedicab. The city’s vibrant energy is infectious and it’s a travel experience worth every bit of preparation.
