📝 Synopsis

The story begins when "Jizuru" decides to bring her daughter back to her lost hometown of 20 years, but this return is filled with the vibe of death when she discovers that the childhood daughter of a former close friend was murdered by strangulation and dumped in an old well, where the condition of the body and the crime scene is strangely similar to the horror case that happened 20 years ago. 😱

The horrors began to creep closer and closer, as the children of other childhood friends began to disappear one by one, amid rumours of the folk legend of the "demon girl in the red kimono" who often kidnapped children, so Jizuru became involved in the search for the truth to protect his daughter, along with digging into the secrets of the past that a group of childhood friends had hidden.

🧐 Interesting review

This story brilliantly draws on the hallucinations of "folk mythology," the belief in demons of Japanese rural society, and it feels suspicious and uncomfortable according to the characters.

The narrative alternates with the secret knot 20 years ago of a group of childhood friends, making sure to guess who's telling the truth, who's lying, and how the latter is connected to today's murders.

Remaining Imamura's signature in its entirety is to lure the reader to believe one way and then to the back with a truth that is much more cruel than I thought. I can't believe it. (I was confused at first. I had to read it again to understand it because the characters were full. Each name was hard to remember.)

Trying to hide your mistakes or get away from the past doesn't mean it's gone. Sometimes getting away makes future outcomes worse. When the time comes, the truth will always come back.

Horror myths, or supernatural narratives, are used only as tools, to cover up the perversions, selfishness, and cruelty that exist in the human mind.

A misdecision, or cowardice, just a moment in childhood, can become a traumatic stigma and later become a tragedy that destroys many more lives.
