... Read moreOkay, my fellow book and cosplay lovers! I couldn't wait to share more about my Day 3 Halloween transformation into Sloane from Brynne Weaver's incredible 'Butcher and Blackbird' series. This character just jumped off the pages, and bringing her to life was an absolute blast. If you're as obsessed with The Ruinous Love Trilogy as I am, you know Sloane isn't just any character; she's complex, fierce, and has this effortlessly dark vibe that makes her perfect for a Halloween cosplay.
When planning this look, I really focused on capturing her essence. The core elements were essential: that cool, slightly edgy rock-band tee, classic dark hair, and of course, her signature tools. For the top, I went with a Pink Floyd t-shirt, which I felt perfectly mirrored her edgy, maybe even a little rebellious, personality. You could easily find similar graphic tees at thrift stores or online if you're trying to recreate this. The key is something dark, a bit worn, and definitely not too "girly."
Next up: the hair! Sloane's dark hair is a big part of her mystique. I used a high-quality black wig that I already had, but if you don't have one, Amazon or local costume shops have plenty of affordable options. Styling it simply, perhaps with a slight wave or just straight and sleek, really helps sell the character's understated coolness.
And then, the props! You can't be Sloane without her book and, well, a certain sharp object. I made sure to pose with the actual Butcher and Blackbird book to really solidify the character for anyone familiar with the series. For the knife, I used a prop knife, obviously for safety! These little details make all the difference in bringing a character to life. It’s all about creating that narrative in your photos.
Speaking of photos, setting the scene is crucial. You might have noticed the purple bookshelf background in my pictures. I love how a simple lighting trick or a thematic background can instantly elevate a cosplay. The purple gave it that moody, mysterious atmosphere that perfectly suits Sloane's world. Think about your character's environment and how you can subtly hint at it in your shots.
For anyone looking to cosplay Sloane or even Lark or Rose from the trilogy, my biggest advice is to really connect with the character. What are their motivations? Their habits? Sloane has this quiet intensity, so I tried to convey that through my expressions—a thoughtful gaze, a slight smirk, or that focused look when holding her tools. It’s not just about the clothes; it’s about embodying the persona.
This "31 Days of Halloween" challenge is giving me so many ideas for other characters from The Ruinous Love Trilogy, especially Lark and Rose. And who knows, maybe I'll even tackle a gender-bent version of the male characters next year! Cosplay is such a fun way to celebrate the stories and characters we love. What do you think about my Sloane? Let me know if you’ve cosplayed from this series or have tips for future looks!
