Born in BMA, upgrading traffic lights "ADAPTIVE" with CCTV AI has started 74 splits. Target for an additional 50 splits this year. 🚦🤖
Bangkok is moving to upgrade the traffic light system from a traditional timer system to an adaptive system that adjusts the light signals according to the amount of cars. The goal is to make everyone's travel more convenient, traffic jams less and less time on the road.
Crossroads in custody. BMA in total. 746 crossings.
* No 168 intersection traffic lights. There are 578 intersection traffic lights.
* Fix Time Model (Fixed Timer) 433 Split
* Adaptive Loop Detector 71 Split
* Adaptive (New System) Real Time CCTV 74 Split
The Fix Time system cannot adjust according to the amount of cars that change at different times, so there are problems that are familiar to Bangkok, such as
* Green light but no car
* The car must be parked on a red light across the street.
* System setup is slow because it requires an officer to enter the area.
But the new system, Adaptive CCTV, is to use CCTV cameras and intelligent processing systems to detect real time traffic instead of the original system, making traffic lights "smarter" and more responsive to real traffic conditions, such as
Adjust the light signal to each direction
Lots of cars, long release, free car, cut power immediately
Out of green light problem without car
Reduce unnecessary red light waiting
Reduce the likelihood of a split central traffic jam (Grid Lock)
Increased travel mobility
By 2024-2025, the BMA has installed 74 new types of Adaptive systems, covering major car-heavy roads such as Sukhumvit, Rama 4, Marines, Ramkhamhaeng, Sathorn, Wind, Rama 9, Ploijit, etc. According to an evaluation, intelligent traffic lighting systems reduce traffic flow by about 10% - 41%. When spending less time on the road, the life time of Bangkok people will increase significantly. In 2026, Bangkok has a plan to expand the Adaptive system by 50 more junctions. Where will it be? Admin will report next.
