Lent day with traditions in Thailand
The date of Lent is an important Buddhist day that means the end of the monks' stay in the temple for three months). It falls on the 15th evening of the 11th month of every year. This year falls on October 7, 2025. Who wakes up the merit? Let's tell you who came here.
A rough history.
1. Lent is the day on which the Buddha is believed to have returned from the celestial heavens to the human world after ascending to the human world and showing the Abhidharma, the Mother Buddha (who was incarnated as the Goddess of Dusit), for a period of three months.
This coming down is called Tevorojana, which is unique: it is a phenomenon in which the three worlds are open to each other, known as "God opens the world" (the world, the angels and the underworld can see each other) in Sangassa.
2. Doing the Pawanana ceremony (Pawanana) Pawanana is considered an expression of compassion, respect, and unity among the clergy.
Meaning: Pawana means "allow" or "allow admonition."
For the priests who are together throughout the Lent, they will speak to each other, giving the opportunity for other monks to warn, or point out defects that have been seen, heard, or doubted in their conduct, so that you can correct yourself according to discipline.
An important tradition usually held on the day of Lent in Thailand or on the following day (day 1 evening, month 11) is the tradition of Lap Sanctevo (short for Tevorojana).
Lap Devo: It is a reenactment of the events in which the Buddha descended from the celestial heavens, with the monks lining up to descend from the cantons or high places (likened to the celestial stairs) to receive alms from the Buddha.
