August 13, "World Wolf Day."
August 13 each year coincides with International Wolf Day. It is set to raise awareness about the important role of wolves in ecosystems and the threats that wolves face today.
Wolves are the apex predators in the ecosystem, living in herds, which help each other hunt prey such as deer or other small animals, and raise wolves. This makes wolves control herbivore numbers to maintain vegetation balance and biodiversity. In Thailand, there are two species of wolves: Dhole and Golden Jackal.
Wolf disappearance is ongoing in many countries, as it is seen as a threat to livestock and has a negative image from the tales and cultures of each country, including Thailand.
It has led conservation organizations in many sectors to raise awareness on World Wolf Day to spread knowledge and raise awareness of wolf conservation to the public.
We can all be a part of wolf conservation through activities, starting with learning and understanding wolf lifestyles, protecting habitat and not deforestation, and supporting organizations that preserve wolves and other wildlife so that wolves remain with our planet.
