The Council of Ministers, in favour of opening up markets for agricultural products, namely, onion seeds, onions (powdery dry and non-powdery dry), potato tubers and fresh potato tubers for processing, within the framework of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement 2026-2028, by providing quantities in quotas, tariffs in quotas and outside quotas, just as the Council of Ministers had previously adopted a resolution agreeing in 2025, in accordance with the resolution of the Committee on Agricultural and Cooperative Development Policy and Plan of 8 September 2025 by the Subcommittee on Management of Garlic Production and Marketing, Onion, Onion and Potato, has analysed that the opening of agricultural markets in accordance with its obligations. The WTO will not affect domestic producer farmers, and also encourage farmers to use imported onion seeds and potato cultivars at affordable prices. For imported onion products as dry, powdered and unpowdered, Thailand cannot produce them, and fresh potatoes for processing, there is not enough output to meet domestic demand. If the import market cannot be opened, it will result in a shortage of inputs to growers, throughout the shortage of raw materials to produce.
Continuing industries, especially the food processing industry, which will affect the overall economic system of the country, and opening such markets will not cause a burden on the budget or future fiscal burden or cause a loss of state or government revenue. However, once the new cabinet has taken over, the Agriculture and Cooperative Development Policy and Plan Committee will expedite its submission to the new cabinet to consider reviewing such market opening plans in line with the circumstances.
