5 ADHD-Friendly Hacks to Declutter Your Closet

🎯 Struggling to declutter? I got you! Here’s how to clean your closet without losing your mind:

1. Start Small, Win Big

• Don’t tackle the whole closet at once—it’s a trap! Start with ONE shelf or just your shoes.

• Set a timer for 20 minutes, go hard, then reward yourself with a snack or scroll break.

2. The Four-Pile Rule

• Make piles: Keep, Donate, Trash, and Maybe.

• Don’t overthink it—if it’s a “Maybe,” toss it in the bin and revisit later.

3. Ask the Hard Question

• “Have I worn this in the past year?”

• If the answer’s no, it’s time to say goodbye. (Unless it’s for a specific vibe or seasonal.)

4. Make It Aesthetic

• Matching hangers = ✨instant calm✨.

• Organize by color or category to make your closet feel ✨main character✨.

5. Maintenance Mode

• Once a month, do a 10-minute refresh. Get rid of anything you didn’t touch that month.

• Celebrate your wins—you’re building habits that actually stick!

🧠 Remember: progress > perfection. Drop a “🔥” if you’re ready to try this.

... Read moreI know the feeling: staring at a mountain of clothes, feeling totally overwhelmed, and then just walking away from the closet. For us ADHDers, decluttering isn't just about tidiness; it's a battle against executive dysfunction, decision fatigue, and out-of-sight, out-of-mind. That's why those "5 hacks" are just the beginning! I want to share a bit more about how I make them stick and what else has helped me finally conquer my closet. First, let's talk about the 'Start Small' hack. It's not just about setting a timer; it's about tricking your brain. My big breakthrough was realizing that if I only focused on one type of item – say, all my t-shirts – and put everything else out of my immediate visual field for that 20 minutes, I was way less likely to get sidetracked. And the reward? Seriously, don't skip it! It trains your brain that this "boring" task leads to something good. For me, it's a 5-minute dance party in my living room! Then there's the 'Four-Pile Rule'. This one is GOLD, especially for the 'Maybe' pile. Here's my pro tip: get a clear bin for your 'Maybe' items and put a date on it. If you haven't touched anything in that bin by three months, donate it *without even looking inside*. Seriously, it helps bypass the second-guessing. Another thing that helped me with decision fatigue was having a 'uniform' section. I realized I wear the same few outfits on repeat, so I made sure those were super accessible and perfectly organized. My biggest struggle used to be 'out of sight, out of mind' leading to 'out of sight, never worn.' For items I do want to wear, I've found open shelving or clear drawers work wonders. If I can see my clothes, I'm more likely to remember them. For accessories, I use clear hooks on the back of my closet door. It's aesthetically pleasing and functional because my brain needs visual cues! And for 'Maintenance Mode'? This is where we often fall off. I learned that my 10-minute refresh needs to be scheduled like an appointment. I put it in my calendar with an alarm, just like a doctor's visit. Sometimes I even do a 'body doubling' session with a friend on video call while we both tackle a small chore. Knowing someone else is doing it too makes it so much easier to start. Remember, every small step is a win. Don't beat yourself up if you have a messy day (or week!). Just reset, pick one tiny thing, and start again. You're not alone in this, and finding systems that work with your ADHD brain, not against it, is the real secret to a functional, stress-free closet. Keep experimenting, and don't be afraid to tweak these hacks to fit your unique brain!
