The thing my therapist told me that stuck

My therapist once told me something that stuck: “you don’t always need more time to heal… sometimes you just need safe experiences to remind your body it’s okay again.”

At first, I didn’t understand it. I kept thinking, shouldn’t I be better by now? But then I noticed how small rituals shifted everything:

☕️ treating my morning coffee like a ritual

🕯 lighting candles at night to feel calm

📓 journaling instead of bottling things up

One night I realized my shoulders had actually dropped. For the first time in so long, my body wasn’t bracing for survival. That’s when it clicked — healing isn’t just about time. It’s about teaching your nervous system what safety feels like again.

💭 Do you feel like healing comes more from time… or from new experiences?

... Read moreHealing is often thought of as a process that simply requires time to pass, but recent insights from therapeutic practice emphasize the importance of safe experiences to truly reset our nervous systems. When we're exposed to stress or trauma, our bodies can remain in a state of heightened alert, making it difficult to feel calm or at ease. The therapist's message about not always needing more time, but instead seeking safety, highlights a crucial aspect of recovery: the nervous system must relearn that it is okay to relax. In practical terms, integrating small rituals into daily life can act as powerful cues to the brain and body that safety is present. For example, treating a morning coffee ritual mindfully allows a person to start the day anchored in calm awareness. Lighting candles in the evening creates a soothing environment that signals winding down and comfort. Journaling provides an outlet for emotions and thoughts, reducing internal tension and avoiding the buildup of stress. This approach aligns with trauma-informed care principles, which recognize that healing depends on creating environments and experiences that feel safe and supportive. As the body experiences these moments of calm, the previously tense muscles, like the shoulders bracing for survival, begin to soften. This physical release corresponds to a resetting of the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic (fight or flight) dominance to parasympathetic (rest and digest) activation. It's important to highlight that each person's path to feeling safe again is unique. Some may find effective strategies through mindfulness, creative expression, or gentle movement practices like yoga or walking in nature. Others may benefit from professional therapeutic support to develop tailored approaches for safety and healing. Ultimately, this perspective invites a compassionate understanding that healing isn't solely about waiting for time to pass but actively cultivating experiences that teach the body and mind that they can relax and thrive. Such knowledge empowers those on a healing journey to embrace small, meaningful practices that foster real recovery and wellbeing.

Things that actually help with AuDHD burnout (from an AuDHD therapist)
AuDHD burnout isn’t just being tired. It’s a full-system depletion that affects energy, emotions, sensory tolerance, and executive functioning all at once. And for many women, it builds slowly over months of pushing through, masking, and managing more than your nervous system was designed to hold.
