Ask for long layers, and face framing

2025/2/25 Edited to

... Read moreStepping into the salon with a clear vision of your dream haircut can be a game-changer, and for me, it was all about getting those perfect long layers and face-framing pieces. I’d been seeing them everywhere – on social media, in magazines – and I knew it was the look I needed to refresh my long, dark hair. It’s not just a trend; it's a timeless style that adds so much life and dimension without sacrificing length. So, what exactly are long layers and face-framing, and why are they so popular? Long layers are exactly what they sound like: sections of hair cut at different lengths, primarily towards the ends of your hair, to create movement and reduce bulk. They keep your hair from looking too heavy or flat. Face-framing layers, on the other hand, are shorter pieces around your face that gradually blend into the longer layers. These are crucial for softening your features, adding a beautiful shape, and giving your hair that effortless, 'styled-without-trying' vibe. If you've been searching for a hairstyle that offers volume and movement, this is definitely it! How to Ask Your Stylist for the Perfect Cut This is perhaps the most important part! Don't just walk in and say, "Give me layers." Be specific. Here’s what I learned and what worked for me: Bring Reference Photos: This is non-negotiable. I brought several photos that showcased the exact type of long layers and face-framing I wanted. Pictures speak a thousand words, especially when hair terminology can be so subjective. Look for examples of people with hair similar to yours – be it straight, wavy, or dark hair. Explain Your Goal: Tell your stylist you want to add volume and movement without losing too much length. For face-framing, specify where you want the shortest piece to start (e.g., around your chin, collarbone) and how soft or dramatic you want the framing to be. I asked for mine to start around my jawline and blend seamlessly. Mention the 'Butterfly Cut' (if applicable): If you're looking for that specific, bouncy, voluminous look, mentioning the 'butterfly haircut' can help. It's essentially a modern take on long layers and face-framing that creates a lot of airiness and lift, especially when styled. My stylist instantly knew the vibe I was going for when I showed her a picture of a butterfly cut! Discuss Your Hair Type: Let your stylist know if your hair is thick, fine, straight, wavy, or curly. This helps them tailor the layering technique. For my long, dark hair, we discussed how to ensure the layers wouldn't make it look stringy but would enhance its natural soft waves. Styling Your New Long Layers and Face-Framing The beauty of this cut is how versatile it is! Here are my go-to styling tips: For Straight Hair: Even if your hair is naturally straight, you can enhance the layers. I love using a large round brush while blow-drying to give the ends a slight bend and create volume at the crown. A texturizing spray can also add a soft, undone look. For a more polished finish, use a flat iron to create soft waves, bending it away from your face with the face-framing pieces. For Wavy/Dark Hair: This cut really lets natural waves shine. After washing, apply a curl-enhancing cream or mousse. Gently scrunch your hair and let it air dry, or use a diffuser on low heat. The layers will naturally fall into beautiful, defined waves, giving you that effortless volume and movement my hair now has. Don't over-brush; use a wide-tooth comb when wet. General Tips: Always use a heat protectant if you're using styling tools. A light hairspray can help hold your style without making it stiff. And for quick volume, a dry shampoo at the roots can work wonders, especially on day two hair. Maintaining this cut is relatively easy. Regular trims (every 8-12 weeks) will keep the layers fresh and prevent split ends. I’m so happy I took the plunge; my long, dark hair has never looked better, with perfect soft waves and face-framing layers that give it incredible volume and movement. It truly feels like a new me!

Great for when it’s hair wash day and you don’t have it in you! 🥱✨ Make sure you have 4 hair ties, and any styling cream ‼️ 1. Section off face framing pieces/baby hairs. 2. Part section behind face framing pieces on top of head in the front. 3. Braid that section. 4. Repeat on other side.
