... Read moreHey Lemon8 fam! Building on what I shared in my main post, I really want to dive deeper into how we can all effectively check our bodies. My experience has shown me just how empowering it is to know your own body, and how a simple breast self-exam can truly make a life-saving difference. It's not about fear, but about being informed and proactive! You're probably wondering, 'How exactly do I check for breast cancer myself?' It’s simpler than you might think, and it should become a regular part of your self-care routine. I usually do mine once a month, a few days after my period ends, when my breasts aren't swollen or tender. Consistency is key! Here’s my step-by-step guide on how I perform a breast self-examination: 1. In the Shower: This is often the easiest place to start. With soapy hands, raise one arm behind your head. Use the pads of your three middle fingers from your other hand to feel your entire breast and armpit area. I use a circular motion, applying light, medium, and firm pressure. Make sure to cover every part, from your collarbone down to your ribs, and from your armpit to your breastbone. Then switch sides! 2. In Front of a Mirror: After your shower, stand in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides. Look for any changes in the size, shape, or color of your breasts. Notice any dimpling, puckering, or bulging of the skin? Are your nipples inverted or showing any discharge? Then, raise your arms high above your head and look for the same changes. Finally, press your hands firmly on your hips, bowing slightly forward, to tense your chest muscles and make any skin changes more noticeable. 3. Lying Down: Lie down on your back with a pillow under your right shoulder, and place your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, repeat the circular motion pattern (light, medium, firm pressure) to examine your right breast, just like in the shower. It helps to imagine dividing your breast into sections or a grid. Pay close attention to any lump on underside of breast or anywhere else. Once done, switch the pillow to your left shoulder and use your right hand to examine your left breast. What am I looking for? The main goal is to familiarize yourself with what feels normal nipple texture and breast tissue for *you*. You're feeling for any new lumps, thickening, hardened knots, or any changes in size, shape, or symmetry. Don't forget to gently squeeze each nipple to check for any discharge (other than breast milk if you're nursing). Finding something unusual can be scary, but please don't panic! Most lumps are benign. The important thing is to contact your doctor right away to get it checked out. Early detection is truly your best defense. Beyond self-exams, maintaining healthy breasts involves a holistic approach. Eating a balanced diet, staying active, limiting alcohol, and avoiding smoking all contribute to overall breast health. If you ever experience breast pain, it's always best to consult a healthcare professional rather than looking for what medicine for breast pain online. They can help diagnose the cause. Remember, this isn't just about checking your booby for problems; it's about building a relationship with your body and empowering yourself with knowledge.
