Part 1 - Research Research Research

Aight gang, so here we go. I know it’s plenty of ways to obtain your CDL. Some people might go the school route and some might go the sponsorship route. In my tons of research I found that neither route worked for me. Most employee sponsorships require you to be locked into a contract with said company to pay down the training tuition. Truthfully the school route would’ve worked for me but it didn’t fit into my timeline due to class starting so far away. I did manage to find one other way to get it and that’s independently.

In my research the independent route works out the best for me as it’s more of a self-paced route. I will say getting your CDL isn’t the cheapest thing in the world but you can’t really gawk at the price tag. You need to look at this as an investment. In my shoes, a life changing investment.

My very first opinion on things. Do your homework. My situation or the next guys situation might not suit you. You may want to go the sponsorship route, you may want to go the school route. So please please please do your research and find which route is best for you. If the independent route is best for you then make sure you follow along to see how the story goes.

To begin things off you need to either jump online or head to your local Motor Vehicle Office. Ours is the MVA for PA it’s PennDOT. Every state will have a different name but they all do the same thing. Anyway head there and get you a CDL book. The right thing to do is to read and study that book to prepare for your test. My learning style is different. I downloaded these 3 apps; CDL Prep (Red box with white writing), DMV Genie (Blueish Purpleish box with a weird shield type logo), and CDL Prep (Bluebox with a steering wheel). I found that the first CDL Prep helped me out the best. Next, you going to get in touch with a doctor local to you that participates in DOT Physicals. For me my DOT was $80. I heard of them being as low as $50 and as high as $125. Don’t be afraid to shop around, if you drive and it’s a Dr. 30 minutes away but he $50 cheaper than that’s a judgement call u need to make to see if it’s suitable for your situation. Never-the-less you need that DOT.

I know this one is going to be a mouthful but it’s really 2 things you need to take from this post

1. Study for that permit

2. Get that DOT

Before I let y’all go. I need y’all to remember keep that head high, can’t let that crown fall. Also, don’t get discouraged, I failed my permit test twice before getting it. Yes I took it 3 times but I passed and that’s all that matters, every time I failed I went back to my study materials and got better every time.
