🚫 Stop Using These Fonts (Yes, I Said It)
These fonts are free and in Canva, but don’t get the tired treatment everyone’s used to.
If you want your content to look curated (without doing the most), these font swaps will save you every. 👏🏾 single. 👏🏾 time.
📌 Save this if your designs need a quick glow-up
We’ve all been there: you open Canva, eager to create something amazing, and instinctively reach for a font that feels safe, familiar, and, well, *everywhere*. While popular fonts like Montserrat, Lora, and Playfair Display are undeniably beautiful and accessible, their widespread use can ironically make your designs blend in rather than stand out. I've personally felt the frustration of my content looking just like everyone else's, despite putting in so much effort! So, why do these fonts become so 'overused' and lose their sparkle? It's often a combination of being free, readily available, and initially very stylish. But when *everyone*—from small businesses to large corporations—starts using the same typography for their headers and captions, that unique appeal fades. Think of it like a popular song; it’s great at first, but after hearing it on every radio station, it just gets… tired. For designers and content creators, this means your message, no matter how brilliant, might struggle to grab attention if its visual packaging feels uninspired. Now, you might be wondering, how can I avoid this trap and choose fonts that truly make my content shine? Beyond just swapping out the specific fonts I mentioned in my post, there are some key principles I follow: Understand Your Brand's Vibe: Before picking any font, think about the emotion and personality you want to convey. Are you playful, professional, elegant, edgy? Your typography should reinforce this. For instance, a sleek, modern sans-serif like Acherus Grotesk (a great alternative to Montserrat!) screams contemporary, while something with classic serifs, like Migra, adds an editorial, sophisticated touch. Focus on Readability AND Personality: Especially for your captions and body text, readability is non-negotiable. But don't sacrifice personality completely! Lora, while readable, often feels a bit plain. My go-to is finding fonts that offer clear legibility but with subtle unique characteristics that make them memorable, like Notoserif Display, which has that sophisticated twist without being overly ornate. Master Font Pairings: This is where the real magic happens! Combining two or three fonts effectively can create visual hierarchy and interest. A common strategy is pairing a strong display font for your headers with a highly readable font for body text. Sometimes, using different weights or styles within the same font family can also create beautiful contrast. For example, a bold, condensed font and a light, expanded version. I'm always on the hunt for new free font pairings to elevate my projects. Explore Beyond the First Page: Canva has thousands of fonts, many of which are fantastic but less commonly used. Instead of just scrolling through the 'recommended' section, try exploring categories like 'modern,' 'serif,' 'sans-serif,' or 'display' to uncover hidden gems. Google Fonts is another incredible resource for high-quality, free options that aren't necessarily in everyone's daily rotation. Test, Test, Test! A font might look great in isolation, but how does it perform in your actual design? Does it work well on a small mobile screen? Does it complement your brand colors and imagery? Don't be afraid to experiment and get feedback. It's all part of the glow-up process! By consciously choosing your typography, you're not just picking pretty letters – you're crafting a visual voice for your content that truly stands out in a crowded digital world. It takes a little extra effort, but trust me, your designs (and your audience!) will thank you.
