Aircon trunking and gas piping works

After our unit had been plastered smooth... from the original "popcorn" walls, it was time for installation of all the pipes... gas, water and aircon trunking.

Gas pipe: because our unit's kitchen was located at the opposite end of the house from the main entrance, the gas pipe had to be laid across the living room which meant that installation fees from city gas was double the usual at about 500$ including gst!!!

Aircon trunking: also, since our unit had one room across the dining area, the trunking had to go past under a beam at the dining. I originally wanted a curved organic profile for the beam but the added trunking made me concerned that the curved design would have to drop lower than ideal. Another minor issue was also how our trunking needed to cross the common room back into the masterbedroom under a reinforcement beam, meaning that our door height had to be lower than intended.

Stay tuned for the partition works!

... Read moreInstalling aircon trunking and gas piping in a home renovation can significantly impact both design and budget, as I found during my recent project. One key takeaway is the importance of planning the layout carefully, especially when the kitchen or aircon rooms are located in awkward positions relative to the main entrance or living areas. For example, my kitchen was at the opposite end from where the gas supply entered the home, leading to increased costs due to the longer piping route. This resulted in doubled installation fees from the gas provider, something homeowners should anticipate if their units require extended pipe runs. On the aircon trunking side, navigating the structural elements like beams can constrain design choices. Initially, I wanted a sleek curved design for the dining area beam, but the aircon trunking passing underneath forced a compromise because the trunking added depth meant the beam's profile had to be lowered. Also, the trunking crossing under a reinforcement beam into the master bedroom meant adjusting door heights, showing how these hidden installations can affect visible architectural features. From my experience, early coordination with contractors and service providers is vital. It helps to map out pipe and trunking paths and factor in structural elements to avoid surprises that lead to design compromises or increased costs. Additionally, consider the future maintenance needs of gas and aircon systems. Ensuring access points and using quality materials can prevent costly repairs down the line. Overall, while installing aircon trunking and gas piping can seem straightforward, the nuances encountered demonstrate why thorough planning and flexibility in design are necessary. Sharing insights and experiences through renovation forums or local groups (#renovationsg, #HomeReno) can provide valuable tips tailored to specific housing types like HDB resale flats.
