... Read moreFrom my personal experience, recognizing and stopping the normalization of toxic behaviors is a pivotal step toward emotional well-being. For years, I used to laugh off hurtful comments and convince myself it was just keeping the peace. Yet, this only buried my feelings and fueled resentment. One key behavior I stopped normalizing was accepting half-effort love. It's tempting to settle for less when loneliness creeps in, but true growth requires holding out for respect and genuine care. Also, ignoring red flags was something I did because I wanted to 'see the good' in people, hoping they would change. That approach taught me that maintaining my boundaries is not about being difficult but about protecting my emotional health. Feeling guilty for having boundaries or saying no is a common trap, but I learned that healthy boundaries actually invite better relationships. Another toxic behavior I overcame was apologizing for having needs. This mindset shifted when I realized my needs are valid and deserve acknowledgement without shame. Similarly, tolerating disrespect due to understanding someone else's trauma was something I justified for too long—only to realize that empathy doesn't mean sacrificing my dignity. Growth sometimes means losing access to people who don't respect your boundaries, and that can be painful. However, this loss often clears the way for more authentic connections. These insights came with self-reflection and time, but they transformed how I engage with myself and others. I encourage anyone struggling with these issues to start small: identify one toxic pattern to change and celebrate every step forward in your healing journey.
