What is Serving Chinese Tea in the Gardens Like? #gongfutea
This was Purcraftea's first time educating and serving Chinese tea at Avon Gardens in Indiana. Our focus question for the audience was "Why Chinese tea could have a floral aroma and taste." Also we asked them is they knew why tea could be relaxing, primarily due to L-theanine, highly concentrated in ancient tree tea leaves.
Later I discussed the biodiverse environment of the tea forest on Jingmai Mountain where the tea trees are grown. I talked about the genetics and age of the tea trees influencing the floral aromatic qualities. We talked about how the terroir produces sweeter leaves from slower growth.
Overall the grounds were stunning, the music and tea relaxing, the people happy and amazed, and the Chinese tea tasted like it never had before.

Serving Chinese tea outdoors is truly a unique and enriching experience that combines cultural education, sensory enjoyment, and connection with nature. When I first learned about Chinese tea ceremonies, I was fascinated not only by the brewing techniques but also by the stories behind the tea leaves. For instance, the location where tea trees grow, like the biodiverse tea forests of Jingmai Mountain, plays a significant role in developing rich floral aromas and sweeter flavors due to slower leaf growth influenced by the terroir. One aspect that often surprises tea lovers is the calming effect tea provides. This relaxation is largely due to L-theanine, an amino acid abundant in ancient tea tree leaves, which promotes a sense of calm while maintaining alertness. Experiencing this firsthand in a peaceful garden setting tied all these elements together—natural beauty, soothing music, and the delicate tea flavors. Moreover, the genetics and age of the tea trees affect the tea’s scent and taste. Older tea trees usually produce leaves with deeper and more complex profiles, making each cup a journey into the history and environment of its origin. Sharing this knowledge while serving tea can transform a simple tea session into an unforgettable cultural moment. If you ever get the chance to attend a Chinese tea service outdoors, I highly recommend immersing yourself fully by observing the tea preparation process, savoring each sip slowly, and appreciating the quiet moments the setting allows. It’s not just about drinking tea but connecting with tradition, environment, and the peaceful ambiance that accompanies Gongfu tea ceremonies.
