Panic attacks VS. Anxiety attacks- what’s the dif?

Anxiety attacks and panic attacks share similarities but differ in intensity and duration. Here are some key differences between the two and how to better manage when/if they occur. Breathing is key to help reset your nervous system and bring you back to the present. Often times I find that my anxiety attacks are triggered because I’m living in the past or future, so recentering myself to the present moment is always an effective solution. Remember, you’re not alone and hug yourself a little tighter whenever you experience any of these emotions & motions.🫶🏽

... Read moreIt's so easy to feel overwhelmed and confused when you experience intense fear or worry. For a long time, I struggled to understand the difference between a panic attack and an anxiety attack, often using the terms interchangeably. But through personal experience and a lot of learning, I've discovered they're distinct, though equally distressing, experiences – and knowing the difference can be key to managing them better. From what I've learned, an anxiety attack often feels like a wave of heightened stress or worry that builds gradually. It might be triggered by something specific, like an upcoming deadline, a social event, or even just ongoing life stressors. I've had anxiety attacks that felt like they lasted for days, a constant hum of unease and tension, sometimes making it hard to focus or even sleep. The symptoms are usually less intense than a panic attack, but they can still be debilitating – things like restlessness, constant worrying, difficulty concentrating, and muscle tension. It's like my mind is constantly racing, living in the past or the future, making it almost impossible to be present. On the other hand, a panic attack often hits out of nowhere, a sudden, intense surge of overwhelming fear. It's like an alarm bell going off in your body when there's no immediate danger. The physical symptoms are usually much more pronounced and frightening. I've experienced moments of fast, shallow breathing, chest tightness that makes me think I'm having a heart attack (a common worry for many!), dizziness, sweating, and a terrifying feeling of losing control or even dying. These episodes typically last for minutes, peaking quickly before gradually subsiding, leaving you exhausted and shaken. Sometimes, it feels like there’s no clear trigger at all, making them even more disorienting. One of the most valuable things I've discovered is that breathing exercises are a powerful tool for both. When I feel that familiar sense of dread or my heart starts pounding, focusing on deep, slow breaths helps to reset my nervous system. Techniques like 4-7-8 breathing can be incredibly effective. Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7, exhale for 8. It helps to bring me back to the present moment, away from the terrifying thoughts of what just happened or what might happen next. Beyond breathing, I've found other management strategies incredibly helpful. Mindfulness practices, even just for a few minutes a day, can help me stay grounded. Positive affirmations, reminding myself that 'this too shall pass' or 'I am safe,' can shift my mindset. Identifying my personal triggers is also huge. For my anxiety, it might be too much caffeine or an overwhelming schedule. For panic, it could be certain environments or stressful situations, though sometimes it remains a mystery. Once I know what might set me off, I can try to prepare or avoid those situations when possible. Lifestyle adjustments, like ensuring I get enough sleep, eat well, and incorporate some form of movement, also play a crucial role in my overall mental well-being. Remember, you're never alone in experiencing these feelings, and it's okay to lean on others or seek professional support when you need it. Hug yourself a little tighter; you're doing great.
