Oh my goodness, if you're dreaming of a truly magical Christmas, Strasbourg needs to be at the top of your list! I recently visited, and honestly, it felt like stepping into a fairytale. The city truly transforms into a 'city enveloped in light' during the holiday season, and it's something everyone should experience. First off, you absolutely must visit the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg. Even if you're not usually into cathedrals, seeing this gothic masterpiece lit up at night, with the Christmas market bustling around its base, is breathtaking. The intricate carvings and stained glass windows are incredible, but the atmosphere outside, with carolers and the smell of spices, truly brings the 'historic squares transform into Christmas markets' magic to life. It’s not just a sight; it's an experience. Then there's Petite France. This charming district with its canals and half-timbered houses is picturesque at any time of year, but during Christmas, it's just something else. Imagine strolling along the cobblestone streets, gazing at reflections of twinkling lights on the water, and ducking into cozy little shops. It's the perfect place for a romantic evening walk or to find unique gifts. I loved just wandering aimlessly, discovering hidden courtyards and beautifully decorated bridges. And of course, the Christmas markets themselves! Strasbourg is known as the 'Capital of Christmas' for a reason. There are several markets spread throughout the city, each with its own charm. Place Kléber hosts the massive Christmas tree, which is a sight to behold, while Place Broglie offers a more traditional market experience. I spent hours sampling local treats, sipping on warm spiced wine, and admiring the artisanal crafts. It’s easy to spend a whole day just hopping from one market to another. Navigating Strasbourg was surprisingly easy, even for a first-timer like me. Most of the main attractions are within walking distance in the city center, making it perfect for exploring on foot. I found a great walking map online beforehand, which helped me plan my route and make sure I didn't miss any key 'sehenswürdigkeiten'. For sights a bit further out, like the European Parliament, the tram system is very efficient. If you’re like me and love the freedom to explore beyond the city center, especially if you want to visit nearby Alsatian villages, having a car can be a game-changer. It allows you to really immerse yourself in the region's festive spirit at your own pace. My top tip for visiting during Christmas? Go in the late afternoon to see the markets before sunset, then stay as the lights come on. The transition is simply magical! Don't forget to try the local 'bredele' (Christmas cookies) and the famous Alsatian 'flammekueche' (tarte flambée). Strasbourg at Christmas truly makes you feel like 'Christmas begins' right there. It’s an unforgettable journey that will fill your heart with holiday cheer and make you want to return year after year.
