This selective moral outrage—demanding religion be kept out of government but then pushing for one religion’s symbols or prayers in public schools—creates a paradox that confuses the public discourse. It’s less about genuine religious freedom and more about asserting dominance under the guise of protecting values. This is why debates around the Ten Commandments or school prayer are so contentious; they symbolize who belongs to the dominant culture. Understanding the historical context is also vital. The principle of separation of church and state was designed to protect all faiths and prevent government endorsement of any. When political actors claim to defend this separation selectively, it often betrays a desire to control public institutions rather than uphold true religious liberty. From conversations I’ve had with people across the political spectrum, it’s clear many feel caught in this double standard. The frustration is palpable when religious freedom seems selectively applied.
