Freedom is being able to show up

Visited my aunty at the nursing home.

My dad’s younger sister.

We actually lost contact for decades.

Life happened.

Everyone moved on.

Now she’s older.

Living in a nursing home.

Since I’m the only one authorised to bring her out, we went nearby for a short while.

But when we sat there…

I saw her smile.

Then I realised.

She hasn’t really celebrated Chinese New Year with family for decades.

Decades.

No reunion table.

No festive noise.

No simple drink outside like this.

And suddenly this small outing didn’t feel small anymore.

When we went back, the nursing home was very quiet.

Not many visitors.

It can feel a bit sad.

It doesn’t take a big celebration to make someone feel remembered.

Just presence.

Just sitting there.

Just one afternoon.

Here’s the uncomfortable question —

Are we too busy building our lives

that we forget to show up for people

who may not say they need us?

I don’t visit every week.

Sometimes once a month.

Sometimes once every two months.

But even that… matters.

That’s also why I’m serious about building my digital business.

Not to chase big things.

But to have flexibility.

To choose when to show up.

To not say, “Sorry, I’m too busy.”

If you’ve ever felt torn between earning a living and being present for family…

you’ll understand why this matters to me.

No pressure.

Just sharing my reason.

This visit was simple.

But her smile stayed with me.

And that is enough. 🤍

... Read moreVisiting a loved one in a nursing home can be a deeply emotional and eye-opening experience. Often, elders living in such places feel isolated, not because the environment lacks care, but because human connection and presence are missing. From my personal experience, even short visits—just sitting and talking or sharing a cup of tea—can brighten their days and rekindle bonds that time had stretched thin. As life pulls us in many directions, it's easy to forget that the simplest acts, like showing up, can mean the world to someone. I once struggled to find the balance between work commitments and family responsibilities. Building a digital business was my solution, not merely for income, but to gain the flexibility to be present when my family needs me most. Freedom, for me, isn't about grand achievements but about having the choice to prioritize moments that matter—like celebrating traditions or just being physically there for someone who hasn’t seen their family for years. It's about breaking the cycle of busyness that keeps us from meaningful connection. If you're feeling torn between earning a living and being present for family, know that it's okay to seek change. This journey toward time flexibility and intentional presence fosters deeper relationships and personal fulfillment. Remember, sometimes just one afternoon spent together is enough to create lasting memories and smiles that stay with us. Ultimately, showing up is an act of love, a way to honor those who shaped us. Don’t wait for a grand occasion—start with today. Because presence, however small it seems, is the greatest gift we can give.

I resigned
I used to enjoy working, I don’t quite know how to describe it but it was just fun spending time with colleagues, celebrating and struggling together. I enjoyed having the financial freedom to buy whatever I liked when I wanted to. I never thought I would be leaving my first full-time job so soon.

How I (9-to-5 Worker) Achieved Financial Freedom
It’s every young person’s dream to achieve financial freedom early in life. I’m now in my 50s, and I had the same aspiration when I was in my 20s. Today, I am financially independent. After making the final CPF deduction for my HDB loan in March 2008, I became debt-free a few years before the age o
