I think the kids are starting to catch on!! 🤦🏽‍♀️

2024/9/1 Edited to

... Read moreIt's a universal parenting truth, isn't it? Our kids are absolute detectives! You think you've managed to subtly delay that promised trip to the pool for "just one more weekend," and before you know it, their little eyes are giving you that look – the one that says, "Mom, I'm onto you!" I swear, they miss nothing. That feeling of being "caught by your kids" is so real, and it often comes with a hefty dose of mom guilt. I know I’m not alone in sometimes feeling completely drained and just not having the energy to fulfill every grand plan I've enthusiastically proposed. We promise them the moon, or at least a fun day at the pool, but then life happens, or frankly, we just hit a wall. It's easy to fall into a pattern of putting things off, especially when dealing with the boundless energy of our little ones. My son, for instance, is absolutely crazy with his ideas and energy, constantly pushing boundaries, but he’s also incredibly promising – full of curiosity and excitement. It’s this combination that makes it both challenging to keep up, but also so rewarding when you see their joy. You want to give them everything, even when you're running on empty. So, what do you do when your kids are starting to catch on to your delays or excuses? When you've been "caught" one too many times promising a trip to the pool that hasn't materialized yet? First, acknowledge it. Sometimes, just saying, "You know what, honey, Mom's been really tired, and I haven't been able to take you to the pool yet, but I promise we will soon!" can go a long way. Kids appreciate honesty, even if they're disappointed. But then, you pivot! This is where you get creative and make up for it. If the pool isn't happening this weekend, what else can you do that’s equally fun and memorable? This is where I often turn to "challenge" ideas. My kids love anything competitive or engaging. Instead of a "sibling dunk challenge" at a public pool, why not create our own splash pad challenge in the backyard? A water balloon fight where teams compete for the most "hits," or a DIY sprinkler limbo challenge. We've even done "indoor fort challenges" where they have to build the most creative fort in an hour, complete with secret passages. Another idea is to have a "parent-child challenge" where we compete in silly games or create an obstacle course in the living room. These impromptu activities often become some of their favorite memories, even more so than the big, planned outings. It shows them that even when the initial plan falls through, you're still committed to spending quality time and having fun together. It's about making those moments count, even if they're not picture-perfect. At the end of the day, parenting is a wild ride, full of ups and downs, promises made, and sometimes, promises that need a little rescheduling. We're all just trying our best, and our kids, even when they're crazy and making us feel "caught," are also incredibly resilient and forgiving. As long as we keep trying to make those connections and make them feel loved, we're doing great. And hey, maybe we'll actually get to the pool next weekend!
