So I did a thing .. I DYED MY LOCS! & though it didn’t turn out how I wanted it to, I still actually love it. I wanted red, orange and blonde with a hint of my natural color.
Fall is around the corner and I wanted my hair to match the color of the changing leaves! Safe to say I’d give my hair a snappy 8/10 as far as the amber effect I wanted in my hair. I think I did a great job!
I also learned that my hair will not take color foreal unless I bleach my hair . 😩 soooo .. I bleached the back and the ends. Lol .
... Read moreOkay, so since I shared my own loc dyeing adventure, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what I learned and give you guys some extra tips for achieving those stunning fall loc colors! Whether you're dreaming of rich cinnamon copper brown locs, vibrant reddish brown locs, or a fiery burnt orange soft locs look, there's a perfect shade for you.
Choosing Your Perfect Fall Palette:
When I was picking my colors, I was totally inspired by the changing leaves, just like you might be! Beyond the classic red and orange, think about deep auburns, warm caramels, and even a touch of golden blonde for those ombre fall color locs or two tone dreadlocks effects. If you're wondering about loc colors for brown skin, warm tones like copper, gold, and deep reds truly pop and complement a range of complexions beautifully. Don't be afraid to mix and match for unique color dreads – that's where the magic happens! I saw some amazing COLOR INSPO online, just like the collage in my pictures, which really helped me visualize combinations.
The Bleach Dilemma (My Personal Saga!):
Like I mentioned, my hair initially didn't want to take the color, and I quickly realized why: bleaching! For those super vibrant or lighter shades, especially if you have naturally dark locs, thinning your locs with bleaching might be a necessary step. It preps your hair to absorb the pigment better. I only bleached the back and ends for my amber effect, but if you're going for a full-head transformation or lighter dreads with highlights, you'll need to consider it. Always do a strand test first – seriously, it's a lifesaver! This helps you see how your locs will react and how long you need to leave the bleach on.
Achieving Ombre & Two-Tone Magic:
If you're eyeing ombre fall color locs or color two tone locs, the key is careful sectioning. For ombre, you'll apply the lighter color towards the ends, gradually blending it upwards. For two tone locs, you might dye different sections of your head contrasting colors, or even dye individual locs completely. This creates dimension and makes your colorful locs truly stand out. My red and orange tones at the roots and some lighter, bleached ends are a perfect example of a subtle ombre effect that I learned to love!
Maintaining Your Gorgeous Colored Locs:
Once you've achieved your desired dyed dreads look, maintenance is crucial to keep that loc hair colors vibrant and your locs healthy.
Sulfate-Free Products: Switch to shampoos and conditioners specifically designed for color-treated hair. Sulfates can strip color.
Moisture, Moisture, Moisture: Colored locs, especially if bleached, can be prone to dryness. Incorporate deep conditioning treatments and light oils (like jojoba or argan) into your routine.
Protective Styling: Minimize sun exposure, which can fade color. Scarves or hats are your friends!
Cool Water Rinses: Washing with cool water helps seal the cuticle and lock in color.
Touch-Ups: Depending on how quickly your hair grows and how much fading occurs, you might need root touch-ups or full color refreshes every few months.
Dyeing your locs is such a fun way to express yourself and welcome a new season. My journey definitely had its unexpected turns, but I'm so happy with my colored locs and hope these tips help you on your own path to beautiful fall loc colors!
