... Read moreHey curlfriends! I know the struggle is real when it comes to 4C hair. For years, I chased endless products and complicated routines, only to end up with breakage and frustration. But I finally cracked the code to amazing length retention and truly healthy curls, and I'm so excited to share my simple, effective 4C curly hair routine with you! If you're looking for a routine that actually works, one that prioritizes the health of your hair and scalp, then this is for you. First things first: clean hair is happy hair! I used to think dirty hair meant more growth, but that’s a myth. Weekly washes are a must for me – every 7-10 days at most, and even more in the summer. My routine always starts with a clarifying shampoo to really deep clean my scalp and hair, making sure there's a clear path for new growth. After rinsing, I follow up with a moisturizing shampoo to add back some much-needed hydration. Trust me, clean hair is a major contributor to softness and less breakage. Curly and coily hair needs hydration, and a clean scalp allows your hair follicles to thrive. Next up, conditioning! I don't skip my deep conditioner – it’s a non-negotiable for repairing and strengthening my strands. I leave it on for at least 20-30 minutes, sometimes with a heat cap for extra penetration. Then, I use a regular conditioner to help detangle and smooth my cuticles. After rinsing, I gently towel dry with a microfibre towel. When it comes to drying, whether you blow dry hair or air dry is a personal choice, but if you do blow dry, remember to use a 450 hair protection spray! This step is crucial to prevent heat damage and maintain your hard-earned length. One of the biggest lessons I learned is the importance of regular hair trims/cuts. I used to skip them, thinking I was retaining length, but all I was doing was creating more split ends. Now, I check my ends every 2 months and get a professional trim as needed. It truly makes a difference in maintaining healthy ends and preventing breakage that travels up the hair shaft. My goal is always length retention, not just growth, because hair is always growing – that’s just human genetics! But retaining that growth requires consistent care. Speaking of care, keep everything simple and leave your hair alone! Over-manipulation will cause more damage. I try to avoid styles that pull or rip my hair out. Your hair needs to breathe and rest. Finding 5 good products and sticking with it has been a game-changer for me. I use just one product to moisturize my hair ends daily or every other day, focusing on sealing in moisture. Don't forget the inside job! Your hair health starts from within. I make sure to take my vitamins – especially iron, vitamins D, B12, zinc, MSM, and collagen – and drink plenty of water. These internal supplements play a huge role in supporting healthy hair growth and strength. And a little secret: hair massages create good blood circulation, which contributes to hair growth. I love waking up those blood vessels on my head, connected to my hair follicles, with a gentle scalp massage a few times a week. This routine isn't complicated; it's about consistency and understanding what your 4C hair truly needs. By focusing on these core principles, I’ve seen incredible improvements in my hair’s health, strength, and length. Give it a try, and you might just find your new favorite curly hair routine!
