... Read moreHey art lovers! I wanted to share a bit more behind my latest piece, 'Conjoined,' from my ongoing 'Quarantine Babe: Dead Inside, Still Growing' series. When I started conceptualizing this artwork, the idea of 'conjoined art' really resonated with the feeling of interconnectedness and shared human experience, especially living through recent times. It’s about how we’re all tied together, even when we feel isolated.
For this particular painting, I chose to depict two yellow, nude figures, which allowed me to focus purely on form and symbolism without the distraction of clothing. The most striking elements, I think, are their unique fruit-like heads and the green leaves growing from them. For me, the fruit symbolizes growth, sustenance, and the cycle of life, while the leaves represent renewal and hope, even in challenging circumstances. One figure bears a skull face, representing mortality and the 'dead inside' aspect, while the other has a softer, rounded face, indicating resilience and the 'still growing' part of our journey. This duality was really important to convey the core message of the series.
The decision to have lit candles burning in their chests, with wax dripping, was deeply symbolic. Candles often represent life, light, and the passage of time. The dripping wax speaks to the constant expenditure of energy, the vulnerability, and the sacrifices we make, but also the enduring flame of hope within us. It’s a powerful visual that I spent a lot of time perfecting with both watercolor and gouache to get that translucent, glowing effect.
Working with watercolor and gouache together allowed me to achieve both the soft, ethereal qualities for the figures and the vibrant, opaque punch of the pink background. I love how watercolor lets colors bleed and blend, creating a dreamy feel, while gouache adds that necessary pop and detail, especially for elements like the wax and the intricate details on the faces. The vibrant pink background wasn't just a stylistic choice; it's meant to evoke a sense of warmth, passion, and perhaps a touch of surrealism, making the figures stand out in their shared space.
Creating 'Conjoined' was a truly personal and introspective process. It's not just about painting; it's about translating complex emotions and ideas into a visual language. I hope that when you look at this piece, you feel that sense of connection and the quiet strength it embodies. It's a reminder that even when things feel tough, there's always an aspect of us that is growing, adapting, and finding light. I'm already thinking about the next piece in the series and how to explore these themes further!
