Restocking the fridge

You know that amazing feeling when you open a perfectly stocked fridge, especially after a big grocery run? For me, it's not just about having food; it's about making sure everything stays fresh and delicious for as long as possible. One of my biggest game-changers has been learning the best way to store apples in the refrigerator. Before, I'd just toss them in, only to find them soft and mealy a week later. Now, after some trial and error, I've got a system that keeps them crisp and juicy. Here's my secret, especially for apples: The refrigerator is your best friend for extending their shelf life. While some people keep them on the counter, storing apples in the fridge can make them last for weeks, sometimes even months! The key is to use your crisper drawer. This drawer is designed to maintain a higher humidity level, which prevents moisture loss from your apples. I also make sure to place them in a slightly open plastic bag. Why? This helps trap some of that essential moisture around the apples, keeping their skin firm and their flesh crisp. And a little trick I learned: if you have a lot of apples, consider putting them in separate bags. Apples release ethylene gas, a natural ripening agent, which can cause other fruits (and even other apples) to ripen and spoil faster. Keeping them a bit isolated helps slow this process down. But my fridge strategy isn't just for apples! My weekly restock involves careful planning for all my fresh produce. For delicate berries like strawberries and raspberries, I never wash them until right before I eat them. Instead, I store them in their original containers or gently spread them out on a paper towel in a breathable container. This prevents mold and keeps them firm. Citrus fruits like oranges and lemons also love the cold; they'll last much longer in the fridge than on the counter. Grapes also do best in the crisper drawer, kept in their bag. Of course, not all fruits belong in the fridge. Bananas, for instance, should stay on the counter until they're ripe. Avocados and stone fruits like peaches and plums also need to ripen at room temperature before they hit the cold. Once they're perfectly ripe, you can pop them in the fridge to extend their peak freshness for a few extra days. My weekly fridge organization isn't just about storage; it's a full reset! I start by taking everything out, tossing anything that's past its prime, and giving the shelves a quick wipe down. Then, as I bring in the new groceries, I sort everything based on its needs. I might pre-wash some of the hardier greens or chop a few veggies for easy meal prep, but I always hold off on washing fruits like apples and berries until I'm ready to use them.
