Lupin Season in New Zealand

2024/12/19 Edited to

... Read moreSeriously, my trip to New Zealand during lupin season was pure magic! I can't even describe the feeling of standing amidst those vibrant fields of purple, pink, and white lupins, with the incredibly clear blue lake and majestic snow-capped mountains as a backdrop. It truly felt like stepping into a painting, a real-life 'fever dream' as I called it initially. If you're dreaming of seeing these iconic blooms yourself, the big question is always, 'When is lupin season in New Zealand?' Generally, you'll find the lupins blooming beautifully from late November through December, often extending into early January. The absolute peak bloom usually hits around mid-December, so if you can plan your trip for that window, you're in for a treat! The exact timing can vary slightly each year depending on the weather, but aiming for December is your best bet to witness those incredible displays. Now, for the 'where'! While the entire Mackenzie Basin is known for its lupins, some spots are truly breathtaking. My absolute favourite, as you saw, was around Lake Pukaki. The contrast of the electric blue glacier-fed water against the endless fields of colourful lupins, with Mount Cook towering in the distance, is just unforgettable. I spent hours just soaking it all in, getting those perfect shots with the purple lupins framing the view. Another must-visit is Lake Tekapo. The Church of the Good Shepherd, surrounded by lupins, becomes an iconic photo opportunity. You'll find vast fields stretching along the lake shores there too. Even driving through areas like Twizel, you'll constantly pull over to admire impromptu patches of lupins that pop up everywhere. To make your lupin-chasing adventure even better, here are a few tips I picked up: Go Early or Late: The best light for photography is during the 'golden hour' – right after sunrise or an hour or two before sunset. Plus, you'll avoid the biggest crowds. Dress the Part: I saw so many people, myself included, wearing white dresses, and it really makes the colours of the lupins pop in photos! Stay on Paths: Please, please, be mindful of the environment. These are wildflowers, and we want them to keep blooming for everyone to enjoy. Stick to existing paths and don't trample the flowers. Be Prepared: The weather in New Zealand can change quickly. Bring layers, sunscreen, water, and comfy shoes, as you'll likely be walking quite a bit to find the best spots. Respect the Locals: Remember these are natural landscapes, often on private land or near local communities. Be respectful of signage and privacy. Seeing these magnificent lupin fields in New Zealand was truly a highlight of my travels. The sheer scale and beauty of the purple, pink, and white blooms against the dramatic alpine scenery is something that stays with you long after you've left. It's an experience I'd recommend to anyone planning a trip to this stunning country!
