Understanding Hypertension 💉 | Nurse Tips

What Is Hypertension?

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is when the force of blood against the artery walls is consistently too high. It’s often called the “silent killer” because it can go unnoticed while damaging the heart, kidneys, and brain over time.

As a Nurse, What Should You Do?

1. Monitor vitals regularly – Watch for elevated BP readings (≥140/90 mmHg).

2. Educate the patient – Talk about diet (low sodium), exercise, and stress management.

3. Administer meds as prescribed – Like ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, or diuretics.

4. Watch for symptoms – Such as headaches, blurred vision, dizziness, or chest pain.

5. Promote follow-up care – Encourage routine checkups and lifestyle changes.

Hypertension can be managed—and nurses play a key role in that process!

... Read moreHypertension, often referred to as the silent killer, affects millions and can lead to serious complications if not managed effectively. Nurses have a critical role in the early detection and management of hypertension, easing patient anxiety by providing education regarding lifestyle modifications like adopting a low-sodium diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and stress reduction techniques. Regular monitoring of blood pressure is essential, especially during pregnancy, to prevent conditions like Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension (PIH) and preeclampsia, which pose risks to both mother and fetus. Understanding the types of hypertensive disorders is crucial. Chronic hypertension exists if blood pressure exceeds 140/90 mmHg before pregnancy, while gestational hypertension appears after the 20th week of pregnancy. Nurses should assess symptoms such as headaches, blurred vision, and edema. Knowledge about medications, including ACE inhibitors and beta blockers, is vital. The administration of magnesium sulfate, particularly in severe cases, helps prevent seizure activity associated with eclampsia. Moreover, patient follow-ups should be encouraged to ensure ongoing management of their condition, emphasizing the importance of adherence to treatment plans, and recognizing early warning signs that necessitate immediate medical attention. This proactive approach significantly aids in improving patient outcomes and overall public health standards.
