My novel to poetry

If you have followed me for a while, you know that I am writing a book, but recently revealed my poetry and prose book is coming out in December! Juggling two projects is hard, especially when you throw a third into the mix.

In my mindset while writing my novel, I vision the scenes. What are the characters doing? How does there hand move? What does the background look like? It’s like playing a little movie in my head and the words just flow. However, when writing poetry I think of a photo. It’s a still version caught and describing the scene is more delicate.

The switch to turn off movie mode was hard at first, but I had examples. From a specific time, I remember the way it felt, the way the background ceased to exist and the emotions bottled up in that moment. I’ve been writing poems for years and now it just seems like muscle memory. I will be driving and the words just pop up.

... Read moreGetting feedback on your writing can be one of the toughest parts of the creative process, especially when you pour your heart into a piece. I used to dread receiving comments like, 'I thought the poem was great,' because while kind, it didn't give me anything concrete to work with. What I craved was specific insight – something like, 'The opening scene was very provocative because it made me curious about your relationship with the protagonist,' or 'The rhythm in the third stanza felt a bit jarring, making me stumble.' This kind of feedback is gold because it helps me identify areas that truly need revision or more development. So, how do you get that valuable, in-depth critique? First, be specific when you ask for feedback. Instead of just saying, 'What do you think?' try, 'I'm struggling with the pacing in Chapter 3; does it feel too rushed?' or 'Do the images in this poem evoke the feeling of loss I'm aiming for?' Guiding your readers helps them focus their attention on your concerns. When it comes to revision itself, my approach shifts dramatically depending on whether I'm in novel-writing mode or poetry mode. For my novel, I'm often looking at the bigger picture: plot holes, character arcs, dialogue authenticity, and the overall narrative flow. I'll read through scenes, imagining them like a film, asking if the actions make sense, if the descriptions pull the reader in, and if the emotional beats land. Sometimes, a scene just needs to be completely re-envisioned, much like a director would reshoot. Poetry, on the other hand, is a more delicate art, as I mentioned. When revising a poem, I become a meticulous sculptor of words. I'll scrutinize every line, every syllable, for its sound, rhythm, and imagery. Does each word carry its weight? Is there any redundancy? How does the enjambment affect the pacing? I often read my poems aloud to catch awkward phrasing or unintended rhymes. It’s about distilling emotion and meaning into its most potent form, much like perfecting a single, powerful photograph. Beyond the words themselves, there's also the 'poet aesthetic' or 'writer aesthetic' that many of us strive for. It's not just about what you write, but how you present yourself and your work. For me, this means creating an atmosphere around my writing – perhaps choosing specific fonts, using evocative imagery in my social media posts (like that dark, cloudy sky image!), or even curating a specific mood in my author bio or 'dp' (display picture). It's about building a consistent brand that resonates with the themes and feelings in your work. Think about how your favorite authors communicate their essence not just through their books, but through their public persona. It’s an extension of your creative voice. To truly enhance your writing, actively seek out workshops or critique partners who understand the nuances of both prose and poetry. Learn to detach yourself from your work during revisions – imagine it's someone else's, and be ruthless in cutting what doesn't serve the piece. And finally, let your unique aesthetic shine through. It’s what makes your work, and you as a writer, memorable.
