The Song Of Achilles 🏛️ Review & Quotes

This one has been on my shelf for a year, and it never once crossed my mind how much it would mean to me. It was my first novel that follows greek mythology and I fear it won’t be my last. What is there to be afraid of you ask? Well, not that I wasn’t aware but reading is an entirely different experience to understanding and fully grasping the meaning behind a greek tragedy.

This story felt like poetry and someones memoir. A tragically beautiful tale that I will indeed hold near and dear to my heart forever.

I can’t wait to read more from @madeline.e.miller !

I miss annotating and was so happy to find time for this one 🩵 some of the most beautiful quotes and perhaps my first bookish tattoo will come of it.

... Read moreOh my goodness, where do I even begin with 'The Song of Achilles'? Like many of you, I'd seen it everywhere, but nothing prepared me for the sheer emotional force of this story. It's truly a masterpiece that stays with you, long after you've turned the last page. The quotes, in particular, are just breathtakingly powerful. One quote that absolutely etched itself into my soul is, 'I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.' This line, often searched for, perfectly encapsulates the profound, almost spiritual connection between Achilles and Patroclus. It speaks to a love so deep it transcends physical senses and even death itself. When I read that, my heart just ached with the beauty and tragedy of it all. It’s not just about knowing someone; it’s about recognizing their very essence, no matter the circumstances, and it's a testament to an eternal bond. Then there's the poignant promise: 'I will never leave him. It will be this, always, for as long as he will let me.' This isn’t just a declaration of loyalty; it’s Patroclus’s unwavering devotion, a promise whispered from the soul that carries such immense weight throughout their journey. It sets the stage for their entire relationship and makes the eventual heartbreak even more devastating. It signifies steadfast love in a world consumed by war and shifting allegiances. Another powerful sentiment that resonates deeply is, 'He is half of my soul, as the poets say.' This line, often attributed to both of them, truly highlights the concept of soulmates. Their connection isn't just physical or romantic; it’s a fundamental part of who they are. Losing one means losing a piece of oneself, and Madeline Miller portrays this so vividly that you feel it right alongside them. These aren’t just lines on a page; they're emotional anchors that ground the entire narrative. Beyond these iconic lines, 'The Song of Achilles' itself is a deep dive into timeless themes of love, fate, and the true cost of glory. Miller's writing is so evocative, you feel like you're walking through ancient Greece, witnessing the Trojan War unfold through Patroclus's eyes. It's a beautifully tragic retelling that explores the raw, human side of heroes we often only see as distant myths. The way she weaves mythology with such raw, human emotion is just incredible. It's why this book resonates so deeply, especially if you appreciate stories of profound connection and bittersweet endings. If you're like me, you'll find yourself highlighting almost every other page. I even started thinking about getting a bookish tattoo inspired by some of these lines! For anyone who devoured 'The Song of Achilles' and is left wanting more, I highly recommend checking out more of Madeline Miller's work, especially 'Circe' – it’s equally brilliant but with a different perspective. And if you’re new to Greek mythology retellings, this is absolutely the perfect place to start. There’s a whole world of incredible stories waiting to be discovered that explore love, identity, and destiny through a queer lens, which is something I particularly cherish about this book. It's not just a book; it's an unforgettable experience that will make you laugh, cry, and think about the nature of love and sacrifice long after you've closed the cover.

Madeline Miller’s writing is gorgeous, and the emotional impact of this story hit me hard—especially the beginning and that devastating ending. Patroclus’ voice, the tenderness between him and Achilles, the build-up of fate… it was poetic and powerful. That said—I’ll be honest—the middle dragged
